Looking at 55 to 65 inch TVs. All Samsungs have the Tizen OS now? I have seen mixed reviews on the Tizen. Anyone have one of these? Thoughts?

I have a Samsung 65" but I have never connected it to the internet for anything. The "brains" of my system are my Apple TV, or I could use my Amazon Fire TV. I have no idea what OS the TV uses.

IMO dont use onboard smart features
Also IMO all firesticks (all of them...doesn't matter cube/max...) are garbage

Get a Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) or a Apple Tv (if your an iphone person)

The higher end Sony's tend to get better reviews than Samsungs, and I'll be moving from Sam to Son for my next TV. If you're a Google user, Sony has Google TV built into it as it's smart TV aspect. Which is a plus for my use.

They really need to come out with a new version of that with more modern standards built in.

So there's a theory that now that the switch 2 has been announced, they will be teasing the Nvidia Shield Pro 2....the switch 1 and 2019 shield pro 2019 used the same nvidia chip.

Even being a little long tooth, its the best streaming box.

Don't use the built-in "smart" features and never connect it to the internet. These "smart" devices like TVs are the worst for security and privacy. Better to use a dedicated external device like a Chromecast or FireTV or Apple TV or something.

I have had Samsungs exclusively for at least 15 years. Just got a 65” last year. Couldn’t be happier with any of them….

We mainly use our TV service (Frontier Fios) and a Roku device for Hulu, Netflix, etc. So the complaints of the Tizen being slow, laggy, etc is just if the TV itself is connected to your internet?

We have two new samsung TV's bought this year. I have no issues with them and fully use the internet on both. They work well & I am a Samsung fan when it comes to TV's. I have one older Samsung smart TV that I moved to garage & use a Firestick on that one. Can't really say which operating system I like better.

If all you're worried about is protecting your local devices from it, then sure. I'm way too lazy to manage VLANs just for that kind of thing though. I'm more concerned with how any IoT device, including TVs, tend to get abandoned by their manufacturer pretty quickly. Or, if they do get updates, they're released irregularly leaving these devices more vulnerable to bad actors. My personal experience with Samsung devices is that Samsung tends to stop pushing updates after about 2-3 years, whereas my five year old Chromecast still gets regular updates from Google.

TV manufacturers tend not to put the best performing hardware in them, so it may be slow even if not connected to the internet. Definitely won't be on par with your phone or tablet. At my last job we had seven LG smart TVs with WebOS on them and they were awfully slow to do anything, it got very irritating. Never buying an LG TV specifically because of that experience. I'd say just go to Costco or BestBuy and see if you can fiddle with the TVs on display to see how you like their performance.

Personal experience here. We had a pretty high end 75" Sony Bravia that shit the bed ledd than 1 month out of warranty. Main board failure. Sony wouldn't do a thing at all and basically told us to eff off. After doing a bunch of research and trying to fight them I found out the main board failure was a pretty common thing on the Sony's. Lesson learned. I will never buy Sony anything ever again. They're making sub par products and using their past reputation to sell a non premium product. Their glory days are over and they know it as they constantly censor any issues on their forums and delete user accounts who post up problems with their products. We've been Samsung ever since and love the products.

Glad you brought this up cause I thought my LGs were on the IoT VLAN. They're not, and I'm dumb for not doing so. Going to swap them over and restrict their NAS access to RO for Plex.

I run PiHole top-layer for my main VLAN and it's amazing how much traffic the TVs generate.

I hope this isn't a widespread issue. I know the display board is known to fail on the Bravia, but that is apparently a common 10-12 year lifespan issue. We just upgraded our old 55" Bravia to the newer Bravia 8 and it's still a lot of value at the price point. Apparently the screens are pretty universal.and it's the rest of the boards that vary between brands/models. This TV is faster than the latest Google Streamcast I have connected to it. Really really hoping it stays this way for another 11 years.

Our Bravia previous to the failed one is still working like the day we bought it and it's about 17 years old.

Back in the '90's, I had a full Sony Elite system, their top line stuff. Every component, including the VCR, was Sony. Then the remote stopped working on my VCR. It was still in warranty and I had registered it when I bought it. I called them for warranty service but they required proof of purchase (even though I had registered it). I had recently moved so I said I would need to find it. They told me that I was within warranty since I had called to report the issue. It took a week to find my receipt, but called when I did. They told me the warranty had expired and they had no record of my earlier call. They would not honor the warranty but offered to do a diagnostic evaluation for $89 if I wanted to send it in. I told them about my history with Sony equipment but they could not have cared less. I diagnosed it myself, ordered the $13 IR sensor, and fixed it myself. I did have to download a bootleg Sony repair manual, but even in 1998 I had no problem finding it on the internet. Oh, and I have never bought ANYTHING else made by Sony. Every now and then I hear about this same kind of experience from someone else. Either a weak excuse for not honoring the warranty or a component fails right after it goes out of warranty. Looks like they are at least consistent.

I've never used the "smart" functions of my TV, and I never will. I have a TCL 65" from 2020(bought for the low input latency) and its only ever been used as a monitor. No sound through it, no apps, nothing. I always use either my xbox or PC to run apps or YouTube. It's just faster and easier. Trying to use a remote to search instead of a controller or keyboard at my gf's house is dreadfully painful, and the sound quality is abysmal. I'd always, always recommend using the TV as just a monitor, nothing else.

I just bought a 65" LG C4 OLED and am putting it on a separate IoT VLAN for the reasons being discussed. It's a smart device but almost everything we do goes through our AppleTV.

Prior you could root LGs and install ad free YouTube which was amazing. YT has changed their ad delivery again and now even rooted it doesn't work aside from auto-skipping the barages of call to actions.

I had ad free on my Xbox for awhile, but that got shut off. I switched to using my PC with Firefox and adblock. No more ads on YouTube.

I have many Smart TV's. I've never setup the 'Smart' feature on a single one of them. Every single one gets a Chromecast or the new Google TV Streamer.

I use HDMI over ethernet for times I want to stream NFL (works better and far more reliably than Chromecasts), and could use YT that way too with ad blockers, but the daily setup is just the TV. I have kids and the same remote for all TVs is convenient. Plus, waaayyyyy too much sensitive info is accessible through the PC. So while I get the whole "use your TV as a monitor and get the best of all worlds," it doesn't work in my case.

Also, anyone ever see how chatty Chromecasts are? I would randomly check in on their data usage through Omada and check how often they'd get blocked by PiHole, and they generate way more than just the TVs.
