Washing my truck this weekend I discovered two scrapes/gouges in one of my front tires. Anyone with any tire expertise able to weigh in with their thoughts on whether it looks like it needs replaced? It has 6000 miles on it.

I’ve spent enough money on truck mods lately that I hate to spend more, but I also don’t want a blowout. When it warms up I’ll be towing my camper so that is a consideration too.

    Thanks.

I would replace them. They are in a bad spot imo.

They're fine, it's only cosmetic, there's no damage to the cords.

I sold and installed tires for about 4 years, so I have seen my share of damage that is fine and damage that needs replacing, this is not in need of replacement.

The OCD in me says, change it out and keep it as a spare. Also better safe.....
The important question is, DO YOU TRUST IT?

If you had exposed the nylon cords or damaged them, I would agree to replace them, but the outer layer of rubber is cosmetic and protection for the cords.

Edit: I did type nylon, but meant polyester.

Just looking at it, looks like a Michelin, but the manufacturers warranty won't cover that, he would need to have purchased a road hazard warranty.

If there’s no bubble in the tire, run them. Isn’t gonna hurt anything.

Really, I would disagree and that comment makes me wonder about your previous post.

Guess where the chunk is missing and the polyester cords are is exposed, is just a figment of my imagination.

    https://auto.howstuffworks.com/purpose-tire-sidewall.htm

"The tire sidewall is just one of several components that make up the standard tire. For example, the bead is a rubber-coated steel cable whose function is to ensure that the tire remains attached to the wheel rim. A tire also has a body that’s comprised of several layers. These different layers are known as plies. Each layer is a different type of fabric. Polyester cord is the most popular ply fabric. Cap piles are extra layers of polyester fabric that some tires contain. Their purpose is to hold everything together. Another important part of the tire is its belt, which is made of steel and is meant to provide reinforcement to the section that’s directly underneath the tread. As for the tread, it’s basically a mixture of various synthetic and natural rubbers. Besides providing lateral stability, the tire sidewall prevents air from escaping and keeps the body plies protected. Some tire sidewalls may contain extra components that serve to increase lateral stability."

Now if it truly concerns you, then look and see if you have a full-size matching spare and if so, then have the tires swapped and use this one as your spare.

I’m TIA trained/certified. If the cords aren’t damaged and you don’t see and sidewall bulges, then it’s fine.

    Try OfferUp for a replacement.

I would also believe a bunch of tundrian-guys in Virginia has take offs that you could purchase a great conditioned one

Thanks everyone for all the responses. I appreciate the help. It’s an OEM Michelin LTX A/T2. It makes me nervous mainly because of towing and if it failed affecting my steering. But I’m glad to hear it is probably okay since it’s shallow.

I like this solution. I do have a full size spare so I’ll just get the tires swapped and keep this one.

This is also a good idea I hadn’t thought of for getting a replacement.
