I was thinking of beating the cat thieves to it and removing the back 2 cats and straight piping it. Has anyone done this and sold the cats? I mean if the thieves can make money i should be able to legitimately sell mine right?

Most are selling them for meth money, pennies on the dollar to scrap dealers.

If that's your thing, go for it.

Any modern vehicle that came factory equipped with cats is required to run them as part of the emissions system. It is illegal to delete them. Smog or not. Some do in non-smog states and get away with it.

i was pondering this same thing.....
i cam out one morning to a louder than normal exhaust noise one morning and found a partial cut in one of my rear cat pipes.

Was fairly common "back in the day" to hollow out the cats so that from the exterior they looked perfectly intact. Guys were convinced that they could get more horsepower by having less restrictions in the exhaust. It wasn't about selling the converter for its precious metal honeycomb innards, in fact most just shoved a broom handle or something through to break it up and discarded it. I think you're setting yourself up for creating a problem of one sort or another, whether it's with "tampering with smog equipment" or creating a situation your engine management system doesn't like. After all, some folks at Toyota spent a good deal of time and money to design the powertrain to run with the backpressure created with the four cats. All in all, unlikely that it'll be a problem of any sort, but I've created more than my share of issues when I should have left well enough alone and spent time and money elsewhere for better "bang for my buck."
