When googling Sequoia to capacities, I find that in 2010 it is 10000 lbs with the 5.7 engine. In 2011, it drops to 7400 lbs. Does anyone know the reason for this? Is it the lawyers? Or was there a change in the Sequoia?

I believe at some point they dropped the “tow package” from the Sequoia, which probably lead to the removal of items like the transmission cooler (if the tow package included one).

My 2014 Sequoia definitely doesn’t have a transmission cooler. It does have the tow haul button though.

The manual does require adding a WDH for anything over 5K.

The biggest issue though is that the Sequoia already sucks with MPG and when towing, gets abysmal MPG, with the small 26 gallon gas tank.

The ones with the "3" are with the towing package.

Nothing changed at all in its ability. They are built the same way pre- and post-2010. The safety standard changed. We used to do more with less. But the bureaucratic safety apparatus continually changes in the interest of self-preservation.

"Look we're making you even safer. Even though there is no list of towing incidents at the previous 10,000 lb rating that motivated the change, we are changing it. You are welcome."

I think it is more then that. They did drop some items from the towing package at some point. If you look at the old 2010 manual, the ones equiped with the towing package also include more coolant, along with additional transmission fluid, implying that a cooler was present. I researched this a while back when trying to figure out if I could add an OEM cooler to mine.

Yeah toyota and other asian brands have been "de-contenting" for some time (to save costs while maintaining or increasing prices of course).

My '15 has the 'tow package' with the larger engine cooling capacity yet no external trans cooler only the "puck" they call a cooler yet is really only a warmer having a coolant line go to it before going into the interior heater core - its worthless as a cooler because the puck is so small very little heat is being exchanged.

I'm in process of adding an oem thermostat - soft and hard lines to connect to a haydon 699 (cyles on-off at about 185) - anything is better than what Toyota gave us in this case. I rarely tow yet I can easily achieve 248 trans temps in simple intown SG repetitions - ugg.

If the Sequoia dropped tow package elements at the same time the J2807 standard was adopted, then it is the exception. The Tundra and 200 series (especially the 570, as the J2807 hit lux trims harder) had the same de-rating due to adopting the standard, but nothing changed with the vehicles themselves.

    My 93 4 cylinder Wrangler has a 2000 lb tow rating. A JK 2 door is 1000.

2010 vs 2011 ATF fluid comparison, now more tow package change.

Anyway, just like the Tundra, I'd definitely add a cooler if towing.

Interesting - from my '15 Sequoi a manual - they increased the eng cooling cap. what does it say for trans fluid cap on yours?

Towing is a PITA, that's all I have to say, carry on.
