For the 5.7 V8 what is a quality serpentine belt kit (belt, idler and tensioner pulley) - the factory Toyota parts run $200, or Gates has a high performance kit for $130, opinions?

I bought the Dayco tensioner and belt, my tensioner was rusted and I could not remove it, thankfully the original seemed fine, the Dayco belt squeals at startup every time I start the truck, very annoying, should have left the stock belt on, it looked fine just thought after 10 years and 65k miles I should replace it. I would not buy Dayco again.

I used Dayco pulley's per research/forum indicating they are OEM and the parts confirmed it ... But I always put a Bando serpentine belt on my asian makes and models. Just never failed me so I stick to them.

New to me......Dayco makes all the belt drives for General Motors.....and they suck. WHY. Go with the Gates, they have a long good history. The Gates kit is even cheaper......but I would go with the GREEN belt. You will never go back.

I use Bando on my Asian cars. I use Gates for everything else. Seems to me that the Bando belts are less likely to squeak. The surface finish of the belt where it rides against the pulley looks different on a Bando vs Gates belt.

Yes, the Gates kit I was looking at is the "Fleetrunner" which has the green belt, its only twenty more than the base Gates kit.

But if you didn't replace the tensioner or idler - then couldn't that be whats causing the squeak?

It could be but it is not, I can spray belt dressing on it and it doesn't squeal for a couple starts, also it squeals more depending on how humid it is out, the tensioner would not do that.

It's worth the money to replace the tensioner and idler, but if not bad you can always re-grease the bearings. Dont let the term sealed bearing stop you, it can be done. (especially when you have an antique and just cant find them) A weak tensioner could cause some noise.

What about the Goodyear gatorback belt? Are they available for our motor? I've had good result using them on my previous toyota celica 1.8L.. quiet and doesnt squeak.

Not sure I understand your point; if your are spraying belt dressing on - then you are giving it artificial grip - thats extra grip it would need to stop squeeking if the tensioner is bad... belt dressing would simply be temporarily masking a bad tensioner. Humidity would also - again affect grip. Or am I missing something?

Spraying belt dressing is another way to check if your belt is squeaking or your tensioner is dying.
You would spray the ribs side of the belt, away from the tensioner. Noise stop, it's the belt. Noise still there, your tensioner. Then again you could also pb blaster and it will produce the same result.

Update to my belt situation, I replaced my 10 year old original belt that was not making any noise but thought it would be a good idea as preventative maintenance. Replaced the original with a Dayco 5080950DR, it was tight to put on and squealed every time I started the truck, after a couple months I couldn't take it anymore and replaced it with a Gates K080948, now it is completely silent, I think the Dayco was too tight.

Goodyear sold it's belt making division to Continental. Gates does make good belts.

I installed a new belt tensioner less than a year ago and that bad boy is already back to squeeking. It was a Dayco replacement..

Nowadays the factory wear and tear items are pretty cheap on Amazon.

Naa. It’s the interwebs. Same people who swear by cheaper belts, change their $10/qt synthetic oil every 1500 miles cause it’s “cheap insurance”.

OEM is as solid as anything out there.
