So I got hooked up to my camper for the first time with this truck, set the trailer up in the computer and set up the brakes.
The rule of thumb I've always followed with brake controllers is set the gain high enough to where you are able to lock up the trailers brakes, then back the gain off a bit till it stops locking.
With the Tundra I have the gain set all the way to 10 and still can't get the brakes to lock on the camper. I can tell they are definitely working well, but wonder if the new fancy tech is preventing the lock up. If so maybe I shouldn't be running at maximum gain.
    Any thoughts?

I had the gain set at about 6.5-7 IIRC, and I was able to lock-up the wheels on my camper (approx 5k lbs). I learned this when I had to make a quick stop because of an animal crossing the road, thankfully no harm to anyone!

I probably just need to do some real world adrenaline braking. I was just messing with it in the storage center parking lot. 7 was the sweet spot on my previous tekonsha p3.

I pulled my kids tandem axle cargo trailer for their scout troop the other weekend (7000lb gvwr and was probably overloaded a tad) and I had the controller set on 6.5 or so for what its worth.
I have pulled a lot of trailers and a lot of weight prior to the Tundra and I always set the brakes as soon as I was pulling away to where it would fully stop me at idle and slow speed. Then I would get up to highway speed and adjust from there. Obviously every trailer is gonna be different as to where you controller is gonna have to be but the trailer should be able to stop you without ever locking up and that is where you want to set it.

I didn’t have a lot of luck using the factory brake controller, for some people it is perfectly adequate. I went with the Techonsha P3 and it’s been great.

That's what I used with my Tacoma but I sold it with the truck! I'm sure the factory control will work out, I'll find out this weekend when I put some highway time on it.

Agree with @Roctane84 Ive always set them in a parking lot or driveway. Set so the trailer brakes stop you at idle speed, then you can tweak from there if you need to.
