When starting up and already synced should the phone auto connect? I have to manually do it. Weird.

    Yes.

It should remember your phone and if bluetooth are on in the Vehicle (may be in settings) and your phone.

Bluetooth must be set to "ON" in your phone.

It is on. It’s like the truck doesn’t remember to connect. It’s there when I hit add a device on Home Screen. Like when I select add a device it shows mine and I have to connect it. Weird

It might be a bluetooth security setting in your phone that is keeping it from auto connecting. Make sure the truck is set as trusted.

    What phone are you using?

One thing to try is to delete the phone from the headset and re-pair it. You may have already tried this though.

    Mostly stock, for now
Mine does as soon as I turn on the key. Do you see your phone battery etc. in the upper right hand screen? If not I’d check in your settings to make sure everything is copacetic.

I have to connect 4 or 5 times for my phone list to load into kenwood headunit, but it always connects if I have bluetooth enabled on phone.

Connection can be funky at times. I have also had issues when my phone gets updates. Whenever there is any issue, deleted the phone from the truck and re-pairing gets things back to working as they should.

I took to the dealer yesterday about this and they said there is a TSB for those with an iPhone 12 but I have a XR so there was nothing they could do and to checks back.
They reset the unit (not just holding done the power button) and still doing it. But I have a funky HU anyway. I get weird CarPlay issues at times.

The CarPlay issues as of recently can be attributed to Apple's last two updates. My CarPlay has been horrible ever since they forced the update on my iphone 10 about a month ago. It got a little better with the following update, but it still acts up all of the time. Before that I would just have to reset the HU if I had a glitch.

Because I got sick of my android being obsolete after a year. Hearing the provider giggle because it is "too old". But yet I see people with iphones that are 6 years old and they still work fine. I am no fan of Apple, but their platform just works and they have great customer service. Besides, they used to be much more expensive than androids; not so much anymore.

Because they’re a lot like Tundras, they just work. (And Android sucks)

I have an iPhone SE (the 2020 version) and every once in a while, it won't automatically connect to the truck. Sometimes it's when I use remote start from inside the house and others it's just random. Doesn't happen enough for me to do much about it though. My old iPhone 7 did the exact same thing.

    It's bluetooth. I think it's just clunky.

You could try deleting the phone off of the truck and clearing the truck off of your phone and then repairing it together and see if that helps.

My son's iPhone was set up in the truck. One day when I pulled in the driveway, all of a sudden I was hearing one side of a phone call (I don't have a phone, so it clearly wasn't my call). It had hijacked my son's side of a call from his room (just above where I park) and I was hearing his girlfriend's side of the conversation. I ended the call and promptly deleted my son's phone from the list.

Honestly, when it comes to AirPlay the problem is that Apple, and Toyota don't communicate effectively when it comes to updates.

I got tired of being Google's unwilling beta tester for the recent shitty updates they push in-app. I was a big fan of the Pixel line for a while, but the last year and half has been a shitstorm of glitches and feature removal. Android Auto had an atrocious UX and poor app support. I don't like Apple for a lot of things, but their app ecosystem and CarPlay are leaps and bounds above Android. Hopefully Google will get their shit together and get caught up someday.

But back to OP, your phone should automatically connect. Your head unit sends out a connection request for about 30 seconds or so after you turn the key. If your phone misses it, you'll need to manually connect or sometimes restart the truck. If it's not connecting automatically, you should delete the connection on both your phone and the head unit and pair it again.

That happens all the time when you pull in a customer's vehicle for service. They are sitting in the waiting room you get to hear the call while servicing the vehicle.

I used to have an old iphone SE, the one from like 2016. I had to manually sync it every single time I started the truck, using that damn microphone button on the steering wheel. So aggravating, and my kids would just laugh and laugh, listening to me repeat my commands at the truck. Then last fall I got the iphone 12. I paired it with the head unit shortly after getting it, but because of my headaches with the SE, I never tried to stream music through my phone until a camping trip this past weekend. My first attempt was to use the USB cord to channel music to my phone. The head unit recognized the songs I was playing on my phone, but there was no audio. Not through the truck. Not through the phone. So I disconnected the USB to reconnect it, and as soon as I unplugged it, voila! Audio through bluetooth. How the hell did this happen?? I never went through the voice activated syncing process on this trip. And what's more, my phone synced automatically several more times on the trip, but I have no idea what I did to make this happen. You're telling me it's supposed to work this way?
