Side window shattered on my 23 pro

My driver side window just seemed to randomly shatter on me while I was driving. I have no idea how or why it happened??!! It sounded like a gun went off right beside me and this is what happened. Does anyone have any idea??

You can clearly see the "point of impact" that caused the window to break, my guess is a rock or some smaller sharp object bounced or was flung up and bounced off your side view mirror. Can you see a scuff or dent or anything on the inside of the side view mirror that shows a rock bounced off of it and redirected it toward the window? In your second picture you can almost see the white powdery glass on that same exact spot.

Had the exact same thing happen on a work truck once. Best we could figure is a rock was flung up and bounced the sideview mirror. Just one of those freak incident things.

 

No, I’m sure something hit it but it just seems crazy that it hit right there.

 

I don’t see anywhere on the mirror that a rock would have bounced off of.

 

Had that happen to my Tacoma when I was on a highway. I drove past an active riding lawnmower when it happened and I thought I got shot at too. It fell apart in my case and was the window next to my 5 year old. Poor kid took a second to realize he had the **** scared out of him and he started bawling.

 

Not saying this is what happened, but I was driving with my '00 Tundra, and someone riding on the back of a motorcycle we met, shot a pellet gun at my truck, and it hit just below the drivers door handle - almost piercing, but not completely the sheet metal. It made a hell of a noise! At first, I thought we'd had a rock kicked up by the vehicles we'd met before the motorcycle. The next morning when I was going to get in the truck, i noticed the major indent in the door and called the local police. Found out there were a couple teens running around town terrorizing people /vehicles with a pellet gun(s)... They were caught and charged after hitting a woman walking, and she was able to id them. I got restitution to fix the door from them.

Were you near any other vehicles or any places where someone might have shot a b-b or pellet gun?

 

I wasnt near any other vehicles but I was passing by a house when it happened.

 

The same thing happened to my Acura's sunroof. I was on the highway with no one in sight and it shattered.

Safelite repair. Safelite replace.

In all seriousness, that sucks. However, it's covered under the glass policy of most insurance plans out there. Biggest PITA is how long it'll take to get the replacement glass.

 

How long ago did you get the windows tinted?
I had a window fail like that because of the tint. It was cold and the side defrost vents were blowing right in the origin point.
The tint film expands and contracts at a slight different rate than the glass. The glue will not let them slide relative to each other and stress is generated. Sometimes there is enough stress in the glass to where this will make it fail.

Windows were tinted at the dealership. That actually makes the most sense, where it look like something hit it is right where the defrost blows on the windshield. It’s cool and humid here today.

I know the feeling. Just had this happen to me last week in the parking lot at work. Thank God it wasn’t the Tundra. We have cameras and saw nothing so best assumption is that it just went boom.

 

There have been a few tundras, new gen, whose rear roll down glass randomly shattered. One was caught on security camera. Was just sitting there then randomly blew out.

 

I have a hard time believing window tint could cause this. I've had tinted windows on every car I've owned going back almost 20 years. How exactly does air blowing on tinted windows lead to this?

 

It doesn’t. You wouldn’t be able to leave your truck outside in an Arizona summer if it could.

 

A friend of mine had a side window blow out just like that on his old Chevy. Happened at night in the middle of nowhere without any other vehicles on the road. Best they could figure, his big tires that stuck out past the fenders picked up a rock and flung it up with enough speed and spin to flip in to the window. His insurance guy said it happens often enough that they didn’t even question it; just replaced it.

As for a BB gun breaking a car window… it will do it no problem. At least my little old red Ryder would when I was a kid..
