Sideview mirrors tilting down when in reverse

I just picked up my new 2021 Tundra 1794 ed. Love everything about it, but I would prefer to not have my sideview mirrors tilt down when I put truck in reverse. Is there a way to turn this off?

to turn off tilt down, have the mirror button in the middle. if it set to either right or left adjustment they will tilt.

I love this option. Wheeling my 1993 LandCruiser for so many years I always angled my mirrors down while off-roading. The automatic feature is AWESOME! They do not move when in reverse unless the switch is set to either mirror. When the mirror switch is in the middle they do not move when selecting reverse

I have that 'feature' on a BMW and Kia, I rarely find it useful because it tilts all the way down where I can see the ground just outside the back door.

When I need to tilt them down, it is far less than that. Maybe the engineers can hear me and allow me to adjust and save along with the seat positions, eh boys?

I believe the feature is intended to help urban owners avoid backing over the island curb at the supermarket, or side-swiping other parked cars, which would explain the mirror aiming point. If the vehicle is parked too close on a side curb, or too near another vehicle, and the driver cuts the wheel too much, instant curb rash on your wheel or side damage. I've tried to explain to my wife that when backing, the car follows an arc that she determines by how much she turns the wheel. I doubt "automatic tilting mirrors" would help her.

if you have memory seat settings, you can set the mirror tilt to what adjustment you want it to be in auto tilt mode. granted you only get 1 save regardless of what memory seat setting you have. the spouse and i have different seat, steering wheel adjustments but the reverse tilt setting is the same across both memory settings. either way we use the same tilt settings anyway so its not a big deal for us.

this is all explained in the owners manual.

IIRC, the angle of the mirror tilt-down in reverse will remain in the position you set it for if you adjust the tilt while the truck is in reverse and the mirror position switch is in the left or right position. It allows you to adjust each mirror separately.

Does this work on the 2nd gens also. I have a 12 platinum but just tried the set mirrors trick but it didn’t seem to save.

I wish to God I had this when I have to parallel park at my wife's favorite restaurants lol.

Her 2013 Lexus es350 sedan does it but my 2014 1794 does not seem to have it which is SO dumb.

Anyone know what year they added this waaaaaaaaaay long overdue feature?

Sometimes I regret buying this 2014 instead of waiting/saving for a newer model with the bigger tank and whatever else I'm missing like this feature.

But those were out of my budget at the time.

Wonder if I can switch ecu's to add stuff like this?

I'm with you. Our MDX has this feature and I use it all the time to get nice and tight on the curbs. If I could add this to my 16 it would be a no brainer.

I have this option on my Kia Niro, simply love it. Makes backing up much easier.
Easily disabled, it's in your manual, plus others have posted how to disable!

I despise feature. If you know how to drive you can see the curb. IMO it takes away from the whole view. When I’m backing up I use both side view mirrors and turn my head around (old school). I rarely use the reverse camera.

My new Escalade has this and I don’t like it but it’s got 100 other cameras so not a big deal

    You despise this feature?

If you know how to drive you can see the curb?

So, my 3" lifted truck, when I look at my mirrors, the view is 3ft off the ground smart guy.
There is NO WAY to see the curb, (except maybe 100ft behind me which is useless) unless I stop and move my mirror all the way down (which I often do) otherwise I drive over the curb, scuff my new tires, and maybe even my wheels.

Sorry we are not all magic and cannot see the ground that is not in view.

I know how to drive thank you very much, was even a licensed professional driver at times during my life.

Tilting mirrors in reverse is one of the BEST features ever created on a vehicle.

You don't have to like it, that's your loss, but those of us who know better appreciate it very much.

Backing up is all rear camera and side mirrors if your smart.
I grew up old school also. Then we evolved, join the club, save your time, and your neck.

Now, does anyone know when this feature was added, and is there a way to add it to older models?

Your mirrors will not move unless the switch is on either L or R, it cannot be in the middle. If you put the mirror switch in the middle it disables the reverse saved location whenever you don’t want/need it

@Joro43 I think you struck a nerve lol

I don't have this feature and I don't miss it. I just use my mirrors like I have on every other vehicle.

Back to OP, I believe like others said, change the setting to the middle of the mirror settings and it shouldn't do it anymore.

@Joro43 I am sorry, I do get passionate sometimes, it's nothing personal :argue: :fistbump:

I also adjust my mirrors whenever I have to parallel park on a curb which is every other weekend or so (wife's favorite restaurant's)
It just sucks to sit there blocking traffic playing with my mirrors, parking, then having to readjust them again to drive when it's time to leave.
This has been a common feature for like over a decade on many vehicles.
Yet another thing Toyota boned us on.
It was something I never thought about until I noticed it.
Plus lifting my truck made it worse.

I don't think the mirrors are even memory to my seat on my 2014.

OP, I concur with Jaypown and others, my wife's Lexus es350 the 3-position mirror selection rocker switch, middle turns off tilt when reversing, having it on left or right and they will tilt down when reversing.
I am sure it's the same programming on our trucks that have this feature.

It should memory save when you adjust it where you need it to see the curb while reversing, tied to your seat setting.

Set it up right and then turn it off, then give it some use if you ever have to parallel park, you may come to love it :fingerscrossed:

I want to know what year this was introduced, and if I can swap ecu's or whatever brain box to get this feature?
I believe my 2014 1794 is fully loaded options wise, I have no blank switch spots anywhere.

Does anyone know more about this feature and its release?

You know what slightly irks me though? I don't have have the side view tilt feature like I said, but I also have the annoying 20" rims that makes it sketchy to pull up on a curb then drop back down again when parallel parking. I miss having small rims and more sidewall so I can do that without fear of scratching everything.

Then again, I could just upgrade...

It's not the height. It's the thin sidewalls of the 20's. Need to drop to 18's

Edit. NVM I see what you mean lol
