I assume the 5ft bed is a no go. What about the 6ft bed? Diagonal?

Will purchase a canopy. Just wondering what type of bed I'd need to build?

Crewmax bed is about 1 foot shorter than the double cab, FYI. Could always leave the tailgate open I suppose.

It was my understanding that you could get the crewmax in 5.5 or 6.5 bed. And the double cab you could get an 8ft bed.

6.5 bed on crewmax is only on newer gen 2022-23. You can get a 2nd gen dc in 6.5 or 8’. Feel like 6’3” would be tight in a 6.5 bed

Sorry, the Crewmax was only available with the 5.5 foot bed for the second generation.

I may be wrong but this is what I found on Wikipedia.

"The second-generation crew cab was renamed as "CrewMax." The Double Cab and Regular Cab are available with a 6.5-foot (2.0 m) regular bed or an 8-foot (2.4 m) long bed, while the CrewMax is only available with a 5.5-foot (1.7 m) short bed."

You started this thread in the 2nd Gen (2007-2013) subforum. The 6.5' bed is not available on the crewmax until the 3rd Gen (2022+)

there was that one guy on here from mechanicsville, VA who had a 2nd gen crewmax tundra that had their frame chopped and put a 6.5’ bed on the back. He also did a front end conversion to 2.5gen. I remember his tag line was “surgical precision” or something like that. Was a decked out truck; very nice. Red or Orange if I remember correctly

Ok. Well I'm only looking at gen2 crewmax. So any idea if a 6'3" guy could fit diagonally in the 5.5ft bed?

with the tailgate down... sure. I'm 5'10 and can't see that happening with the gate up

Would be pretty tight and would have to sleep like a mummy. I believe diagonally the bed is ~82”. You’d be best off putting your head near the tailgate and feet toward the cab. Wheel well would hit your shoulders if you went the other way. Pretty sure 2nd gen beds are actually an inch longer than 2.5 gen beds. Every inch counts!

where are you located? I’m sure there’s a member on here that would meet up with you so you could lay in their bed

I just measured mine diagonally, about 7' corner to corner. I have it loaded up with stuff right now and am headed into a meeting or I would try to lay down in it. I'm 6'2". The best bet would be to leave the tailgate down if that's possible. What kind of situation are you thinking?

I have a CM with the 5.5ft bed. I have a Napier truck bed tent that sets up with the tailgate down. Plenty of room and has stood up to some serious wind and rain. Didn’t sleep those nights but stayed dry. Have several different tent/camping options. Depending on where you go or what you bring my favorite is a toy hauler. You can bring toys and be spoiled. Full disclosure, toy hauler is long gone.

I was hoping to out a canopy on it. And sleep in it during roadtrips and/or in the mountains hunting or backpacking. Would be nice to have that fully enclosed space that you could heat and feel secure in. Even if you were stopping in a parking lot somewhere.

7ft seems doable. But you add even a short oerson to the mix and I'm not sure.
