hey guys I'm getting a slight ticking noise from my 06 V8 Tundra with 187K miles. I did a timing belt job in June of this year and it didn't have this sound. It seems to run fine and after it's been running for a while the noise starts to go away. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Either a exhaust leak, or our engines can sound pretty tippity tappy on startup.

Mine makes a knocking tapping metal sound sometimes when I first start it up during cold weather only, goes away after a few seconds, I’ve always wondered what it could be.

What weight and brand oil you running? Change brands or anything recently? Was the oil changed in the last 5k miles?

Same here. Sounds kind of like a noisy lifter for a couple seconds on a cold start. Hydraulic lifters on these trucks?

Sounds like lifter chatter? I used to have this on my old ford ranger 4.0 after she hit 150k+ miles. Try using heavier weight oil on your next oil change. This worked perfectly for me.

No hydraulic lifters on the 4.7. Our trucks use a shim-over bucket type valve train.

Sounds like mine with a minor exhaust leak. Typically only shows up when the engine is cold.

Yeah it sounds like that audio clip but not as loud. It doesn't sound like an exhaust leak. I know those first hand. Yeah the oil has been changed in last couple hundred miles don't remember the weight or brand. I gotta record it and let you guys hear it. Can we upload short videos on here or does it have to be via YouTube or Dropbox.
    Thanks for your help everyone

Hey FWIW, I have a similar rhythmic tap like that on my sub-100k mile truck. Mine sounds light, like a slight bit of lifter tapping.

    Can't say the OP's or Toyoda's sample are, it's 10x louder than my '06 w/VVT, but ...

I dunno. I remembered hearing what sounded like mild lifter tick when I recently cleaned my engine and bay. So it definitely happens when the engine is cool. I'll hafta check it next time I need to drive somewhere, which may not be a couple days. Will get back to you if it doesn't escape my mind. I'm not often outside the truck while it's running, for whatever reason.

Gotcha! Seems like a lot of us are having that issue, if it’s even an issue that is, maybe our engines are just noisy during colder temps sometimes.

It may not even be an 'issue' necessarily, I dunno. I just had to take a short 1-2mi trip. I confirm I have a very faint rhythmic tapping at startup. By the time I drove the couple miles and back, if it was still there, I couldn't hear it very well.

What weight oil are you using? Could be cold start piston slap.

I know the 5.7 ( :puke: ) has a piston slap issue if you go heavier than recommended oil weight.

    (Something like that. ;) )

I don't think I have the noise being asked about. I also went to a 20 weight.

Seems to only happen in colder climates, atleast mine does, I never hear it in the summer
