so the real 3rd gen is coming out in 2022 MY and despite this forum calling the refresh in 2014 as a 3rd gen and them calling the 2022 as the 4th gen technically the 2022 MY is a 3rd gen.

    2 gens : 2000-2006 and 2007-2021

pointing back to a post on these forums to a staff member, even they didn't call the 2014 refresh a 3rd gen ...

poor horse... already lived a rough life, died a rough death, and still getting beat long after its decomposed. The bones are just dust now.

also, this forum isn't calling it 3rd gen. That's Toyota. They made it, they call it whatever they want. Doesn't matter what people THINK it should be called, it should be called what the manufacturer calls it.

The even poorer horse is the forum that insists on continuing to be incorrect. :annoyed::boink:

The 2014-2021 Tundra is still the XK50 (2nd Gen) platform, just with a refresh. Same frame, same drivetrain (actually, we lost drivetrain options over time).

Same thing happened to the 5th Gen 4Runner (2010-current). It got a mid-cycle refresh in 2014. Yet everyone understands it’s still on its 5th generation/platform.

Great post and links, OP! There are a few of us “2nd Gen Truthers” on here.

I think it would be a fairly easy problem to solve. Change the name of a few forums and several threads.

That’s not true. There is one solitary, awful, brief, poorly researched yet somehow approved Toyota pressroom article that says 3rd gen. That’s it. Somehow, some pressroom intern got that approved. This is in direct contradiction to the model codes Toyota sets for each generation. The 1st Gen Tundra (00-06) is the XK30 platform. The 2nd Gen Tundra (07-21) is the XK50 platform.

The Sequoia has always followed the Tundra one year later. 1st Gen Sequoia (01-07) is the XK40, and 2nd Gen Sequoia (08-22) is the XK60. The new Sequoia is scheduled to be debuted in 2023.

I'm confused as to why it matter who considers what years to be which gens. Some of the maintenance changes after 2014, so while it might be considered by some to be a refresh, I think it's better to keep them separate as it can cause some confusion while posting about how to do certain things. Now if you wanna measure your chode and say your chode is bigger because you have a 4th gen while i have a measly poor mans 3rd gen, then go for it. whatever helps you sleep at night. I feel like a lot of people do that who have 2nd gens and want 2014 plus to be considered 2nd gen so it sounds like they have the latest and greatest. I personally don't care as I love my "2nd" gen 2020 and will be happy with it for years to come. Let's beat this piece of shit horse as far into the ground as we can.

Why not just remove the ‘gens’ from the forum names and just list model year ranges.

would everyone be happy then? Or would people still find bs reasons to bitch and whine about it

Just people with older stuff trying to stay relevant. They don't want their model getting put to the back.

Does it really matter though lol? I mean I thought most of us bought the tundras for their long term reliability so having it for many years was always in the cards and the great thing is so many other people have older ones as well that it never really gets pushed to the backburner. I'm sure there's just as much discussion for 1st gens as 2nd gens, maybe slightly more for 3rd, but not to the point where you cant find people to help you with any issue you encounter in older models.

Back in my college days when I was Corvette crazy I had a couple different 69's, a 71 and 77. Forward fast 35 years...cars long gone but the good memories remain. For some reason they are now referred to C3 Corvettes. What a stupid I am for always referring to them as 69, 71 and 77 Vettes. What a stupid I am!

Truth matters, and it’s always relevant. To me, that’s reason enough. :notsure:
Even though I may want to think that my truck is a new, totally different generation than the 2007 model, it’s just not true. I bought a 14-year-old brand new truck. It’s a 2007 with a big fuel tank, dual climate, and CarPlay. I think many “3rd gen” owners want to separate their trucks from the 2007, but under the refresh, it’s the same truck.
Same as it has for 14 years!

Outside of the forum sub headings....I've never referred to my truck as "Gen" this or that or cared what it's considered.

I completely agree that truth matters - this truth has just been beat to death, resurrected, rehashed, bastardized, sacrificed with a baby goat, and brought back again and again. People that care know the difference. People that don’t care, don’t.

I personally love my 2.5nd Gen and have an appreciation for all years prior.
