Electrician lost my power plug for my Nest Protect Smoke/CO detector.

You can't purchase a replacement, it's non-standard. Google Support won't send me one.

If you have a dead Protect, access to returns/e-Recycle, I'll Venmo/PayPal you $20 for one. Google support ships free if your device is less than 2yrs old. (mine isn't).

Connector looks like this, sometimes one wire is blue. (these soft ass hands aren't mine, I borrowed these pics from Reddit)

Yeah, it's a pisser. If you make a device that you say has a 10yr lifetime, why tf don't you sell essential replacement parts for it for at least 9 years?!

I found a 3d printer template for a connector that may work. Tough part will be finding the square female pin to insert to the connector.

Could you cut the connector off and use your own?

Not following you. Currently I have no connector, just a hole with two pins in the back of the smoke/CO unit. It normally gets line and load onto the two pins from the little pigtail shown. The pigtail is what I need.

Can you pull that unit open and cut the wires behind that connector then splice some more wire on and connect it to the power supply that way?

Probably. I could probably also just solder some leads on, or bludgeon one of my old smoke detectors and steal the wires/pins out of it and cobble something together just as easy. These are from 2015 and recommended for replacement in 2025, so 3yrs life. Not sure if it's worth all that for an added 3 years. I may just hack something together. This post was more of a shot-in-the-dark to see if anyone had a dead one laying around. Smoke/CO detectors can be such a pain in the ass with false alarms.

The thought crossed my mind. Actually joked with our GC saying "I guess we could...", but he reminded me the local store would just end up throwing it back on the shelf, screwing up the next guy's day when they buy it, get it home, and realize there's no power cord. I don't want to be that guy on a problem I can solve giving someone a few bucks for their throwaways.

If I read this all correctly, what you really need is someone who has a newer one (less than 2 years old) who can call and get a new one sent to them for free - then they just send it your way right? IF someone was so inclined. Still a pile of crap to have to deal with it. They should stand behind their products for their lifetime (when they are a big/successful/gorilla-ish, etc.)

That avenue would work, maybe a couple of different ways:
    • Find someone with a Gen2 less than 2yrs old, have them make a claim for lost one, Google will send free of charge, often next-day.
    • I buy a new one at the store, setup, register it, call in a claim for a damaged power cord, pack it all up, return to store after cord comes
    • Go into store, grab serial number off package, call in a claim for power cord and hope it works on an unregistered device
It's a hell of a lot to ask on the 1st item, I think. I do a lot for strangers on the internet, but even that seems like a bit much to ask.

It's been a minute, so I'm bumping this one just to see if any new blood happens to have something on-hand for this.

I've got appropriate wire I can use, and I believe have a 3D plan for the part, I guess if I knew anyone with a printer that used material suitable for household AC voltage, and I knew what ends to crimp on, I could make my own.

I'd try a JST-XH or Dupont female. If the pin pitch is an interval of 0.1" you could then use an appropriate holder for either connector style. Downside is you won't have the retaining clip. Or, like you mentioned, could attempt a 3DP piece which maybe would work with FDM.

Appreciate the suggestion. If pin pitch is measured center to center of the pins as it is with other electronics, this is 5mm. I'm hunting to see if there's an XH connector with that pitch. It would work perfectly if appropriate for 120v / 0.1A and it matched pin thickness, ballpark. As long as it's not arc'ing in the ceiling and would create a fire hazard, I'm open to using it.

EDIT: This NV connector looks like it could work. https://www.jst.com/products/crimp-style-connectors-wire-to-board-type/nv-connector/

But coming up empty on a place to buy one, with a few cm of pigtail lead. Only finding the plastic housing itself.

The standard is 2.54mm pitch, so a general 3-slot retainer for whichever of those types would work. The connector has no problem with that ampacity; they're rated much higher. Worst case, you could hot glue the connector for peace of mind.

Navigating the JST website is brutal. Good luck. I'd skip getting that exact retaining clip and doing the above.

Ended up engineering a solution and I'm leaving this here in case anyone else out there is in my "screw Google and their garbage" policies about replacement power cords for their Nest Protect smoke/CO2 detectors.

I bought this Molex Mini-fit crimp kits, which are supposedly good up to at least 200v applications - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074M1RZHX/

I would've preferred something that supports 16-18awg, but it worked. I just had to trim a little connection tab off the molex plug, and it was 5mm on-center / 5mm pitch I guess, it fit perfectly. Crimped the pins with a proper crimper, put a dot of solder just in case. Fired up like a champ.

So, once again, screw Google, thanks folks here for your help, and if you're finding this page via Google, hope it helps.
