What's the best way to get a spare key and key fob made without going through the dealer. should be a cheaper way. Can I get a key on with a chip in it on Amazon and get it cut at a key place? I know if it doesnt have a chip, it wont start the car.

I just had this done today on a chevy truck at work. You can buy a blank key and get it cut, but they need to program the new chip/key to correspond with your current key. They're are electronics in the key that need to be paired to your truck or it will not start.

A little of this and a little of that.

And that’s where they get ya, with the programing of the key.

I believe that Amazon, your local hardware store and YouTube are your best friends on that deal. Just remember you can only have a max of 2 keys paired to your Toyota truck, and good luck!

Been fighting with this on the wife's Camry....got a spare key from ebay and NO ONE will cut the key. I keep getting the dealer or locksmith line from everyone. Dealer is $90-150 depending on which dealer and the locksmith is $75. I think its highway robbery regardless of which way I go to be perfectly honest especially since i just bought 2 cars from the dealer and they told me to pound sand and pay full price to have the key done. Also get the "No guarantee" line because I didn't buy the key through them.

On my 2016, Techstream shows 4 keys max (I have 3). I bought a "switchblade" key through eBay, and took it to my local locksmith to set up. He said since I didn't buy it from him, he would give it a try, but no guarantee (if I had bought it from him, he would cut it free). He cut the key to match my original, programmed the key security chip and then programmed the remote control for the door locks. Yes, I paid $45 for the locksmith and whatever I paid for the switchblade key. There are 3 steps to this and it was worth it to have him do it IMO. He is very experienced and uses a programming tool much like Techstream (looks just like the Techstream screens). He does this for all vehicle brands and models. Of course if the eBay switchblade key failed, I would have bought an "all-in-one" from him. Best of all, it took all of 20 minutes and no hassles.

Techstream and Amazon (or ebay) is your friend. My coworker just did this exact thing for his gen2. Bought everything from Amazon, had a local key place cut the key, did all the programming himself using Techstream. Less then $100 for everything including the software/cable and can make as many keys as he wants for any Toyota

When I bought 2013 Tacoma told the dealer third key or no deal. I had a lot of bargaining power when I walked in the 30th and said I wanted to pick tuck up in a few days. They said why and I said just because I am kind of busy now. They asked what it would take to get me to pick it up tomorrow on the 31st. So I started down my list.

I bought a key on Amazon and the local hardware store screwed it up. Never had a problem getting keys cut there before. Looking for a locksmith close by.

Not yet. You can't lock your key in the tundra while it's in the ignition. So I gave my wife my second one. I hid the fob in the truck box just in case.

I've had the car for a couple of months now, just really kills me that they wouldn't budge after buying 2 vehicles from them within a week on a goddamn key programming.

Gone this route as of this writing but it hasn't been simple and still is not working so we'll see. A whole ton of aggravation for something that can be bypassed pretty easily just seems like another way to stick it in deep...

I have 3 keys to my truck , came with two keys and only one fob. (2015 certified used) and I said I wanted the 2nd fob . They told me to come back the next day and they would have the fob done. When I picked it up it had a key with it ! I have 2 non chipped keys one for a hide a key and one in console for when I don't want a full set of keys in my pocket .

If they're non chiped they won't start your truck. They would only unlock it. They must be chipped.

I just want to be able to open the door. The hide a key in the back if someone finds it under the bumper they can get in not take it. FYI if you try three times to start a Toyota with a non-chip key it’ll shut it down and you have to call the dealer to get it reprogrammed. Buddy mine said he learned the hard way on that.

Update to this. got the key programmed now. Had to downgrade from Techstream v12 to v9 to get the key programming functionality. I forced Home Depot to cut the key, they didn't charge me anything as they didn't want any evidence of having done it just in case I made a stink about it lol. The guy was pretty cool actually, they can cut the keys they just won't because its aftermarket and of course some dumbass threw a fit or sued them for not cutting the key correctly so they stopped doing them. I suggested a waiver lol.
