I recently had a flat tire and couldn’t get the spare tire lowered. The underside of my truck is pretty rusty thanks to living it’s entire life in Canada and Ohio. I needed a new set of tires anyways so I had it towed and replaced all the tread. However it would be good to be able to use the spare. Tire shop said they couldn’t get the hoist busted loose either. I’m guessing I need to cut the chain to drop the spare then replace the mechanism. Has anyone done this and have any guidance or advice?

    Thanks!

Did you or the tire shop try to spray it all down with some pb blaster or anything? I’d say that’s worth a shot before trying to replace the whole thing and shouldn’t cost much or take a lot of time.

If not, look through an online parts catalog for it and see if it looks replaceable. I’ve never seen or heard of it being done, but I’m sure it is.

Check the build link in my signature.
You should be able to hit a used part supplier or pick-and-pull yard for something like that and likely a lot cheaper than buying a new one. Anything 2007 or newer will have the same hoist setup.

The tire shop supposedly did hit it with penetrating fluid. I haven’t looked at it myself yet but when I replaced the rear shocks I had to cut the nuts out because everything is super corroded. Blaster and my little propane torch have come up short on a few occasions w this truck.

A new OEM part is about $100 so it won’t break the bank. I’ve read threads in a 4RUN forum where folks replaced theirs. I’m sure it’s doable and probably just a few bolts. Once you cut the chain to get the tire out. Maybe I’ll take pics and do a little write up if/when I replace mine.

Oh, and the parts diagram on Cool Springs Toyota website just shows it sitting off to the side and not connected to anything. Not much help...

Here’s a few pics of the carrier. I don’t think PB is gonna help :(

my 07 is a Steel cable , kept wondering why people were calling them chains..

it shouldn't be to hard to replace if I recall correctly it was held on by a few bolts to the brace assembly when I removed my dry rotted spare.

-but definitely hit it in both the chain hole and tool insert with some lube for a couple days then try tighting then untighting (raising / lowering it) and see if it breaks free.-

just looked closer at pictures definitely crusty. Would recommend the enclosed steel cable one for the replacement.

can use marine grease on the cable or use a good lube of some sort an service it periodically, it will keep rust free.

Don’t those bolts go through or under the bed so you don’t have access to them? Maybe they can be reused but the state of rust might not allow it.

I've replaced the spare tire hoist and it wasn't bad at all. 4, 10mm bolts hold it in place on a brace that's bolted to the bottom side of the bed. The spacing is a little tight but it can be done. Took me probably 30 minutes total and like you said just under $100 for the OEM replacement.

I ordered a new one yesterday for my 07, that has a cable. I also ordered the frame cross member, which is badly rotten. The frame rails looks okay, oddly enough.

Hey all...brand new to forum and am having issue finding part number for replacement spare tire hoist for my 2008 Crewmax. I too have the one with the braided cable...not the chain. Mine actually looks exactly like the hoist in post #7 by Nueve. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

it's one of these parts numbers both have the same diagram of chain but neither say what's different, google search of the numbers show the cable style, but at the same time haven't verified witch is witch. the 2000-2006 Tundra comes up close with cable diagram on 519000C060 part number. hope this helps some or gets you in the right direction. I know there's a guy here whos a master at finding parts but I can't remember his name at the moment. @cptjnz

I'm in same situation. Spare tire winch seized up due to rust. People having trouble removing spare tire. Here is my solution until winch knocked free with PB blaster or replaced. Let some air or as much air out of spare tire as you can to create a little wiggle room between tire and frame above. Hopefully tire valve is facing down. Use a crow bar to knock bracket holding tire up loose from tire wheel and tire will drop down to ground. This will give you much better access to spare tire carrier winch to try and free winch or replace entire assembly.
    Hope this helps.
