My 2017 spare tire has a sticker (temporary use only) is that just for the tire or dues the wheel fall under this? Its a 6 ply tire the same size as the truck just wondering if the wheel is thin and cheep. I would like to keep it and use it for a fully rated spare or should I look for a new wheel?

I looked at the tire again it's the OEM tire from Toyota Bridgestone Dueler H/T P275/65/R18. The wheel has temporary use only sticker no speed recommendation I can find.

Mods feel free to delete this thread if desired lots of misinformation on my part..

yeah its temporary. made to get you to a tire shop. I wouldn't want to find out if its the tire or the wheel or both. Stay under 55mph and play it safe

Not sure what trim you have but there's a chance the spare is a different size wheel and/or tire than your stock wheels and tires.
Another reason to keep it under 55..

That's interesting. I think @1lowlife may be correct, else I see no reason why a full size spare would be speed limited. That's something they do to spare donuts in the trunk; I've never seen a full size pickup with a spare tire that was speed limited.

I've yet to use my spare, knock on wood, but I have lowered it for various mods.
I just looked at it and it's a 255/70/18 on a steel wheel.
There is nothing on the wheel or door jamb sticker indicating 55 MPH for spare..

My OEM were 285/55/20 on alloy wheels, currently running those wheels with 275/60/20 tires.
OEM was close in size to the spare, the 275/60/20 are almost and inch taller and wider than the spare.

I’m really curious. Do you have a pic of this spare? I thought the spares were all just normal tires, no restrictions.

My speculation - it’s a steel spare that weighs a bit more than the other wheels. Maybe worried about the ABS not liking the different masses at high speeds??

I was thinking that the ABS and wheel speed become disgruntled due to the tire size difference. I don’t recall the maximum variation in wheel speed readings where the computer throws a fit and shuts you down, thinking a wheel is slipping. I think it was discussed in a thread about spare tire vs running 33’s or 35’s. A while back.

My spare is also a 255/70r18 on a steel wheel. My truck came with 275/65r18 tires. The difference in height is less than 1/16 of an inch. The spare is 32.055”; the factory size is 32.075”. Basically identical.

Well since the tire is just a normal tire it must be the wheel. I don't see a speed limit any where thought that whose on the tire tool kit;).

I'd fucking send it. If the truck doesn't like something (a la ABS) then it's going to freak out almost instantly I suspect. If it feels fine, I'd do 80mph on it but that's just me :D

Its the going that’s easy, the not stopping that’s hard. Sorta want to figure that out before a person gets carried away, like in a box.

Post a pic of the sticker. Mine doesn’t have it.
Some have slightly different sized tires (I think the trucks with 20” wheels come with 18” spares for example) but the OD is essentially the same, that’s all that matters. And even that isn’t super critical with open diffs.
The wheel and tires are regular.
I can see Toyota being worried about the driver has no way to properly torque the lug nuts on the side of the road and the spare might not be balanced

Does the spare have TPMS? If not, that's probably the reason for the temporary use only warning.

It's only temporary because it's ugly.

    My OEM tires 275/65-18

    OEM spare 255/70-18

Same exact circumference, same ratings, spare wheel same rim width, so no reason for temporary, other than it's just ugly

    All five tires now 265/70-18

And the spare is still ugly.

    Alot of them
I have 2 spares in the garage. One from my 2013, and one from my 2020. The one from the 2013 says Temporary use only on the tire itself. The one from my 2020 has a temporary use only sticker on the wheel, and the tire also says temporary use only. Both are 255/70/18's which is what both trucks came with as the stock size.
