I browse the Tundra groups on the book of faces and saw someone post that the oil put in third-gens at the factory is special. Loaded with zinc to do some kinda of metal hardening during break in.

I don't think it's true(for several reasons) but thought I ask if anyone has heard of this happening with any vehicle or ICE for that matter. I've never heard of any OEM using special oil for break in. I have seen some generator manuals say to change it early the first time to get the initial debris out but that's it.

I follow Facebook groups for several vehicles I own including a Jeep TJ. I gotta say the folks that get their answers on the FB groups aren't usually the same grade as found in forums like this.

Someone should take a sample out of a new truck and analyze it.

100% Agree!. but it can be entertaining :)

I do plan on paying for an oil change at the 5000k mile initial service. 10k is too long regardless of how good the oil is. Any metal/sand debris is gonna recirculate through the engine over and over regardless if the additive package. Even if the filter catches it, how many times will it go though the bypass systems till it makes a trip through the filter media?

I thought I was the only wierdo doing some many oil changes…. Fuk it, oil is cheap. Last time around I did my own special blend. 5 quarts 0-20 and the 2.7 quarts 0-30w.

If I'm reading correctly, it looks like the average oil analysis shows 780-790 ppm of zinc.
The 1000 mi. change shows 745 ppm.
Looks like the special break-in oil with extra zinc myth is busted.

yeah dont see any oem wasting money outside of normal oil to put in a vehicle. exotic vehicles excluded.

I heard they sprinkle hope dust and love into the break-in oil.

The real break-in happens in the very first few minutes of engine running. That happens at assembly plant, of course. Piston rings fully seat in within the first ~500 miles. It is advised to avoid excessive idling or prolonged full-power runs during that time. Also it is a rule of thumb to use the same oil during break-in that will be used regularly in the engine's life. This way the parts wear to each other only so much that the oil is able to create a sufficient film.

You got two free oil changes from Toyota, just ask dealership to use your free 10k oil change at 1k miles or whoever you want to change it first time, don't pay

Thats what I did... I actually paid for 1k oil-change.

Now I thought I'd do it differently... You never know what may happen tomorrow, you may not have this truck for whatever reason, so I think it's better not to pay until you have to, and use the included free changes :)

I don't think it'll create confusion at the dealership. You get two free oil changes, one will show up as used, so they'll just use next available. Right?

I plan to do oil the first oil change at 2500 ish miles and then go 7500 after that. For full synthetic oil a 5k oil change is pointless, and it probably wouldn't do anything to go to 10k mile intervals like Toyota suggests. They engineered the motor systems in Japan, I am sure.

The OEMs compete about maintenance requirements...pretty easy for them to require just enough to get the vehicle out of warranty before problem arise.
No additive package is going to mitigate debris in the oil recirculating for more miles.

i paid for my 1300 mile oil change out of pocket. told the tech to not use the freebie until 10k.

came out to $110 but meh, compared to the v8 $87

will do the same at 5k oil change, pay out of pocket.

When I was researching if the oil I was to use met the Toyota spec, I found this on oil company web site. I previously only thought of mechanical damage and wear from the A S/S
    • Start-Stop Engine Technology
      • Allows the engine to stop and start automatically to reduce fuel usage
      • These engines can present issues with sludge formation and varnish deposits
      • GF-6 and API SP oils help prevent these issues

He recommends 5k oil changes and shows why, good video.
Hard to go wrong with the 5k or once a year if you don’t drive much.
