Hello my 2004 Toyota tundras speedometer stopped working, the next day it had a check engine light, we got the code and it was code P0500 I replaced my speed sensors that are on the side of my transmission and nothing worked. I’m stuck and need help with this, if there’s anyone who knows anything please help.

    Wheel speed sensor?

Has anyone done any recent maintenance to the truck?

It’s a speed sensor on my transmission, not a wheel speed sensor.

    Ok, if you say so.

Unfortunately, your truck uses the ABS module which is taking input from the wheel speed sensors to determine speed, so I dunno wtf you're doing on the transmission.

I really appreciate the help but I’m almost positive it’s on the transmission it’s called a vehicle speed sensor and it has a gear on it and tells you the speed on the speedometer and it determines when it’s the best time to shift the transmission and yes the wheel speed sensors also determine your speed.

Did you post here for help, or just to shoot down people who know the problem and its most common cause?

Please, do yourself a favor and read the PDF in the thread I linked. It's as clear as day. You are sniffing in the wrong direction and shooting me down when I try to point you in the right direction. This is the last reply I give you on this. Others on this forum have had your issue. It's usually the WSS (wheel speed sensor/s)

Check to see if your ECM is seeing output from all four wheel speed sensors. If not, there's your problem. You may be able to test rears using the simple method shown here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/wheel-speed-sensor-issue.93434/

But I asked if anyone has done any maintenance recently, because it could be related.

No I do need help I just know that it could be my gage cluster, my vss, my alternator, vss wiring, or my battery I just wanted to see if anyone had an idea of where the vss is located, I know it’s on the transmission that’s all. I appreciate you responding to my messages, thank you for your time.

You're missing the forest for the trees.

Toyota started using the wheel speed sensors AS the vss source.

So the transmission output shaft speed sensor which USED to be the vss may no longer do the job you think it does.

I don't remember the change over year but it was sometime after 01-02. My 05 uses the wss for vehicle speed.

OP has the weird year, an 04. So he's still got the 4spd, but also the WSSs IIRC. So the output on the trans doesn't quite work the same as it would on my 02. I think that's where the confusion on OPs part may be coming from.

@Nathan650, I would follow this route; you posted on here for help and this member is someone who knows a lot about these trucks. Follow his advice, troubleshoot according to the pdf he linked and see if it answers your question. If nothing else, it gives you some more truck time to familiarize yourself. But if I was a betting man, @Shifty is leading you down the path to cure your woes

    Exactly.

And I know it could absolutely be related to the gauge cluster, but how often have we seen gauge cluster fails here? Never, as far as I can tell (which means it'll probably happen this week ). But if I were OP, the first thing I'd be doing is pulling trying to verify output from all wheel speed sensors to see if input is there.

Barring any available way to see if the wheel speed sensors are outputting, pulling them to cleaning them, verify no buildup is happening, verify the wheel speed sensors aren't packed-in with rust or covered in fluid, I guess check tone rings, sensor alignment.

I can't recall whether ABS fuses are pivotal to speed input or not, but I feel like it's always a good idea to verify fuses if something stupid like this starts happening.

OP is ignoring a well-documented link with ABS + WSS here. I'm not trying to mislead anyone (and maybe resent the implication a tad). I think if OP spent a fraction of the time looking into what I'm saying versus shooting it down, the problem could've maybe been fixed already

Just dropping this tidbit here given it comes up in a search on a similar problem another user is having with the transmission VSS. @Nathan650 was correct in what he was working on and was not needing to find a wheel speed sensor. Some of our 1st Gens indeed did not come with ABS, hince no wheel speed sensors.

Learned something new with you pointing out the brochures yesterday, @BubbaW - thanks for that!
