For all the 22 Tundra owners driving the new engine... How is the Start and Stop engine feature? I am not a huge fan of that when the engine shuts off and on while stopped but wondering how you like it so far and if its something you get used to?

I do not like engine on/off feature in general.

For the Tundra, you do not have to worry about it shutting off if you don’t like it. The way the Tundra’s system is set up, you need to really push the brake hard when coming to a stop to engage the engine off feature.

The way I’m driving, the engine never turns off. When coming to a stop, a message pops up saying “press brake harder to engage engine on/off.” You can also turn the feature off manually with a button on the left side of the steering wheel.

I hated it the first week and would shut it off when I turned the truck on. Now it doesn’t bother me. I leave it on. If I wanna shut the engine off at a stop light I’ll just press the brake harder. No issues with it. It doesn’t shut off automatically and doesn’t allow you to use it until you’ve made a complete stop.

I came from a 2018 f150 with the same feature, didn’t like it. Toyota has really improved the design though. As mentioned, you need to depress the pedal hard to activate it. My truck also has the “Hold” feature. When you combine the two, it can be useful in drive throughs, long red lights, or anywhere you want the truck off and take your foot off the pedal. Between the button to turn it off, never needing to activate it if you don’t want, and being able to use it when needed and combining it with the hold feature, I enjoy having it there as an option.

I works well for what it is. Most cars have it these days and Toyota's system is simple to use if you want it, but easy to bypass if you don't.

What bothers me is how it acts when I pull into my driveway. I feel like it wigs out a little. Maybe I'm doing something that I don't realize because I feel like the engine stops, then starts, then stops again when I come to a complete stop on my driveway and then shift into park.

For me I have a habit of pushing the break a little harder when I’m putting it in park. So it only shuts my engine off when I’m about to shut the truck off anyway. So it cycles the engine an extra time for no reason. I’m ready for the permanent delete.

Mine doesn't work at all so nothing to worry about. Unless there are other hidden issues since it doesn't work

I like it, I wish it shut off more. It won’t when it’s charging the battery and sometimes when the A/C is on.

The auto off/on kicks in when you have it enabled (there’s a button on the lower left next to the steering wheel), when you depress the brake pedal enough, when you’re on cruise control and it stops the vehicle, when you put the truck in park.

    Wondering about the hybrid version.
Is the motor starter used to restart the engine, or does it use the motor/generator between the engine and transmission for a smooth restart?

I’ve felt what you’re talking about to, mine doesn’t feel like it shuts off completely but almost like the revs drop and it almost stalls out. Like it can’t decide if it’s staying on or auto shutting off.

You know I think you’re right about this, I tried parking in my driveway just now press the break put it in park and it was fine. Did not shut off. Maybe there’s something to pulling up in the driveway and not wanting to drive into the house that causes me to push the brake harder lol

Have to admit, first time the engine stopped & started again, thought it could be an engine issue until reading the manual again learning about this system. I'm OK without it.

I feel Tundra’s stop/start system is much better than some other manufacturers and even older Toyota systems. It’s a decent feature and if you pay attention while you drive you can force the engine on so there’s no delay when you take off. If you press down on the brake while the engine is off, it will restart the engine. When I see the light for cross traffic turning yellow, I’ll do that to get the engine going before my light turns green.

Must be your operation. If you move your foot on the brake pedal it will restart. There’s a function for restarting the engine before it shuts off if the ECM judges the brake is being released.

Toyota said the hybrid has a starter but it’s only used for cold starts at at -30 C or something like that. Every other time, it’ll use the electric motor to start the engine.

Not an operational thing. Pulling into the drive, and just prior to putting in Park, or maybe just after shifting to P, the throttle occasionally dips so low it seems like it will stall out, then wakes up because the truck realizes it hasn't met the threshold for auto stop and the driver hasn't killed the ignition. Auto stop is very clear and very consistent (except in the very cold), so I'm not sure the two are related, but it seems that way. It's hard to describe the phenomenon because it happens and corrects within a second or so.

Turned my start/stop feature off for local driving today (two or three trips) and did not experience once what you are describing. But if left on experience the same thing.

Pretty sure it's related to auto stop, a feature I used to hate but actually like in the 22 Tundra because I can engage it when I want with a firm pedal, whereas most other systems have a mind of their own, frequently engaging when you least want.

I think I had actually had this happen too. I came to a stop sign and stopped for few sec on a incline. The truck kinda stalled, the dash message said something about vehicle not in park and bunch of other lights on dash popped on, but then half a second later it turns back on and ran normally. No dash lights or anything.

Not sure if the start stop is affected by temperature but I have yet been able to activate the start stop and the temperature has been below 25° most days little message pops up that says climate control

Not sure if mine is working correctly, but when I take the Tundra in for 5000 mile service, will ask and check to see if there is an update.

The stop/start doesn’t work in park, only on drive. The idle speed in park is different than the idle speed in drive so what you’re seeing is the idle speed getting pulled down while shifting it to park.

It is affected by temperature. Below are all the conditions. There is a lot more info in the owners manual.

The Stop & Start system is opera- tional when all of the following conditions are met:
    • The vehicle has been driven a cer- tain amount of time.
    • Vehicles with dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range: The brake pedal is being depressed firmly. (Except when the vehicle is stopped by the dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range when in vehicle- to-vehicle distance control mode)
    • Vehicles without dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range: The brake pedal is being depressed firmly.
    • The D shift position is selected.
    • The driver’s seat belt is fastened. • The driver’s door is closed.
    • The selected driving mode is not
    “4H” or “4L” mode. (4WD models
    only)
    • The Multi-terrain Select is not
    operated (if equipped)
    • The windshield defogger is off.
    • The accelerator pedal is not being
    depressed.
    • The engine is adequately warmed
    up.
The outside temperature is 23°F (-
    5°C) or higher.

    • The hood is closed. (P.276)
    • “TOW HAUL” or “TOW+” mode is
    not operated (if equipped)

That sounds like it actually stalled. I read a post on here that said the engine stalled while in an inclined driveway waiting for the garage door to open.

I noticed for me. I always have front windshield defrost and feet vent on. So auto stop start system always doesn’t activate. Message says auto stop start off for climate control. Which is fine for me. Better than turning it off with button and having the yellow light on dash.

Yeah. It definitely stalled. But it only happened once. Never stalled on my driveway yet. And my driveway has a steep incline.
