So the last few months my starter was making the dreaded one click noise. The last week it got worse taking 10-15 turns of the key to get it started. I read a lot of posts on here and made sure it wasn’t the relay, I replaced the battery and took it to an auto electric place too and they said it was the starter as well. I decided to take the starter in and have it rebuilt. Felt better than buying something new. I put the rebuilt starter in and put everything back together and now I am getting a high pitched whining noise or ‘zinging’ noise when I turn the key over with no start. Does anyone know what might cause this? I am Hoping I don’t have to do all the work again of taking the starter out. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like maybe a bendix that isn’t engaging. The starter motor may be spinning, but the gear is not extending out to grab the flywheel.

Gotcha. Do you think that would be an issue with the starter or another electrical issue?

Speculation, but it would be the starter if that’s your issue.

edit: also possible to install incorrectly and not be making contact with the flywheel even though the starter is operating properly

Ok I got it all torn apart again with the starter removed. The teeth have a little wear on the starter and all teeth seem intact on the flywheel(?). How would I install correctly? It seemed to seat pretty easily, but I did have to pop it fairly firmly to get the starter to come out. Also, thank you for taking the time to respond, it’s been helpful.

Need to check that the bendix is operating. It should extend when power is applied to engage the flywheel teeth. While it’s out, it worth taking it back to the place that repaired it and have them check it again.

You know man I ended trying to put it back in to see if it wasn’t in correctly and that seemed to solve the problem. Started right up a few times in a row. Thank you for the help though
