Been looking around at threads of starter replacement. I have a 4x4 2010 that I am just getting 1 click and nothing else.

Took battery to be checked, said it was good. Should I trust that? Truck has over 180k and never been replaced. EDIT: Starter hasn't been replaced, battery was last year.

Looking for a little advice or anything else to check before I start ripping into my truck.

In the old days we'd crawl under the truck and lightly tap the starter while someone else turned the key... haven't had to do it to a Tundra. Starters are starters though......

EDIT: Yeah won't be able to tap this one - it's under your intake

If you still have the original battery, the first thing I would do is replace that.

You can check a fuse under the hood, but I’m betting starter. Mine just went at 195k on my 2008. Had a shop do it & they were able to snake it out without removing too much.

I would start with power directly to the starter, if it spins verify relays & fuses, then the ignition switch.

Yeah I'm super happy with it. I had an older yellow top that was struggling to stay charged when my truck would sit for a few days. I also couldn't use ditch lights or a bumper light bar for longer than 15 min or it would die. With the vet discount I got it for $360 shipped

Checked fuses yesterday, all are good. I hear a click at the starter, wouldn't that indicate I have power to starter?

Assumming it is the starter, is it easier to pull the engine mount bolt and lift it or yank the manifold? This was a northern truck so it is rusty...

The starter is not under the intake manifold, that's a 4.7.

On the 5.7 the starter is next to the passenger side engine mount. You can unbolt it through the wheel well, but for me it just barely didn't fit between the frame rail and engine to extract it. There's a single nut on top of the engine mount that unbolts it, undo that nut and jack up the engine about 2" and you'll have enough clearance to pull the starter out. I had the exact same issues and symptoms as you, took about 4 hours to do myself and that was spending time trying to fuck with NOT jacking the engine up, I would just do that right off the bat.

Would it make it easier to take everything apart if I jack up the engine first? Or wait til its time to actually remove the starter?

I'm not sure, it's been awhile since I did it. As I recall unbolting it was pretty easy without the engine lifted, and you can even pull the starter out and rotate it around, there's just nowhere to get it out between the exhaust and engine and frame. I don't think lifting the engine first will really help, but it might not hurt and you're gonna have to do it either way. Once the engine mount nut is pulled you can jack the engine up and down easily and see what works.

Also, where do you jack it up at? At the mount?

I put a block of wood under the oil pan and lifted it there. Not saying that's the best place, but you're not lifting the whole weight of the engine since you're rotating it around the drivers side mount. If you see a better and more structural option go for that, but gingerly lifting the pan worked like a charm.

Last question for now. I have limited options due to Christmas for parts. Whats the best starter to buy that I can get at advance, autozone etc?

Also I really need truck back on road Monday. So waiting on a starter isn't really an option.

Damn... late to this, but Rockauto was my way out while I removed the starter, 2 days and it was at the house, but it wasn't Christmas... I posted a video I followed somewhere on here, but I didn't remove the manifold nor the engine mount and I changed a few things to minimize work...... still gotta remove the wheel to get to the heat shields though.. and hold on to your extensions or drop a towel over the frame rail... I lost a 12mm and extension in there...

did you try jumping the starter relay.. the purple one?? I mean odds are it is the starter, but its worth a try... Key in the ignition to on and I think you jump, right to left while looking at the relay and you should hear the starter engage, or click..

I'd try to get a denso starter, I believe denso is the OEM manufacturer.

From left to right from the side or from the front of the engine? What should I use to jump it?

I'm pretty sure they have those in stock and can have them at the store within a day, you can go on the website for advanced auto, autozone, etc and look it up to see if your local store has it, or call them with the part number and they can tell you when they can get it, which is usually next day. The dealership has also always been able to get me any part I needed next day, it's worth a try if they're open tomorrow

from left to right if you're looking from the front of the bumper to the cabin... a wire, paperclip, 2 flathead screwdrivers that fit in the small slots and you should be good...

Rockauto, I bought my Denso starter through them...

I plan on replacing my starter in the very near future as well. My truck is very similar to the OP's.
Is OEM the way to go, or is there an aftermarket starter to consider?
