Steering wheel wrap

Anyone have any experience with wheelskin steering wheel leather wraps? I would love to see any photos and reviews. My 1794 fake wood is super slick, figured I might try a color matched leather wrap steering wheel wrap. Appreciate your input

 

I absolutely love my wheel skin!! Great company to work with. I have 3 photos of it on page 8 of my media page. Great company to work with. The leather is very high quality, and the install was fun and pretty easy. I actually broke the thread the first time and had to call for a replacement and they sent it for free.

It looks great and is very comfortable and durable. I got the euro perf model and it really does keep my hands dry. I've seen the wraps where you have to take the steering wheel apart, and they do look extremely clean, but I love this because when it wears out, its a very simple replacement. And for the relatively low price wheel skins offers, it was s no brainer for me.

 

Thanks for the info, i ordered mine last night. I ended up ordering the euro perf style also, im hoping the tan and black color option matches my interior. ill post pics when its done.

 

It took about two hours. That’s because I went slow. The install was easy. The cover originally fits just slightly loose in places. I called the manufacturer and they told me that with sun exposure and moisture from your hands that the skin shrinks into place nicely, and they were absolutely correct. One tip is make sure that when you stitch it together, you don’t pull so hard that the two edges “buckle“ against each other. Just snug it so the end meet tightly. Like I said, I broke the string the first time, which isn’t easy. It very thick waxed cord. The benefit to this is I got some extra practice and was able to kind of perfect my technique. Just take your time and it’ll look good. And make sure it’s centered. Once you have a about 3 inches of stitching it’ll stay in place.

 

After a few weeks the cover fits amazingly. The leather has “hardened” and has that semi shine you get from the factory leather wheels. In the end this is a sewn on wrap and it goes over the wheel features so you have to take it for what it’s worth. Also remember nobody will be looking at it as closely as you will. I got my clazzio seat covers at the same time and the color coded are an exact match. Everyone who comes into my truck thinks it’s factory.

 

When I say slightly loose I mean you could place your hand at the top of the wheel and rotate like a motorcycle throttle and the skin would shift slightly back and forth. I used this to my advantage and twisted the top portion slightly so that the stitching was closer to the rear. I made it fit my hand so the stitching was not at my finger tips but in the crevice between my first two finger digits. Once it hardened it was perfectly ergonomic.

Another vote for the wheelskin.
When I got my 2018 truck there were two things it was missing that I had to get and both get used more than any other thing on the truck.
The Driver Grip Handle and the Wheelskin. If someone uses their truck for work with a lot of mud and grit the plastic/rubber one original makes sense.
Anyway the wheelskin has held up well in 3 years. I'll just add make sure it is warm when putting on so you can stretch for a tight fit.

Is the Wheelskins cover wider where the steering wheel has the hand grips (at 10 & 2), or do you just have to stretch the leather more?

this is going back 3 years but from what I recall. its the same all around.

Yes you stretch at 10 and 2 and it is the most snug and tight there no movement.
At the very top it is snug but more material. If you grab the leather tight and twist toward the dash or yourself there is some movement in the threads area.
But it doesn't move when driving or holding the steering wheel normal.
The bottom with the way the steering wheel is shaped with the two spokes was the most difficult.
I would start anywhere else but there, 8^0 and get the hang of it so when you get to the bottom you are better at doing it.

i was going to go with this but due to the reviews stating a three hour install and only one color option i went with the Wheelskins.

 

I say add some color for some flair. Everyone can have a black steering wheel.

 

When I installed a Wheelskin on my 2004 Tundra, it probably took between 1.5 and 2 hours. It is just a slow process, at least it is for me.

 

I have been wanting to do this for awhile. Did some digging around and found out that the Tacoma steering wheel fits. 20-25 minutes and done. OEM factory leather steering wheel. Just bought one off Ebay off a 202 Taco for $110.

 

you got a steel on the price - the cheapest new one I found was $300+

 

Tell me about it. After seeing this thread I said, let me just look. it was like the 5th item. Checked it out and clicked on buy now. It was actually like $160 with tax and shipping. But yes every other one I saw was $250 plus.

 

It’s the same all around. You have to stretch it pretty good on either side of the steering supports you close the gaps

 

That last photo is how I twisted the top stitching to be further back for more comfort.

Ok one more thing, pay attention to this stitch right here. For the support sections they want you to do a false stitch, in which your just going through the holes on the front side of the leather until you get past the support.

I did that and I started my regular stitches just past the support, but I wasn’t able to get it right enough for the back and front to meet. So what I did was start one stitch early and that gave me enough tension to be able to snug the skin together immediately after the support. You’ll see what I mean when you get there but if your having problems getting the leather together this is a good option that worked for me.
