Im having an issue with my 23 tundra’s straight backup assistant. After added a trailer and went thru step 1 to 6. It’s finished set up and its works like design but when I turned off and turn it back on, the system did not detecting the trailer and asking me to pull forward. I did pulling forward…forward…forward and the system is still cannot detecting the trailer. Brought it to local dealership and was told nothing wrong. Please advise. Thanks

I learned to back up a trailer in my Father's 1972 CJ5 with a small utility trailer. That's no easy feat with a short trailer and wheelbase, but he taught me how to use just the rear view mirrors without contorting around to look thru the rear window. Now it's second nature for me.

My fishing buddies and I usually have some good laughs at boat ramps. On busy days, we inevitably offer to back someone's boat into the water for them. They usually are very grateful. It's a skill that surprisingly few people ever master.

I doubt I'll ever use my Tundra's backup assist. It's more of a distraction than anything.

There's a decent video on Youtube. The guy attempts to backup straight for about 200 feet thru a gate using the assist. It didn't do too well. It veered of course about 4-5 feet. He would have hit the gate post, if he would have kept going.

It's another "bar trick" feature that I'll never use, like lane centering.

You'd be wise to find a large empty parking lot and practice backing your trailer with no assist. Learn to do it using only the rearview mirrors, so you don't have to wrench your back trying to twist around and watch thru the rear window. Whatever you do, don't wait until you're in a crowded camp ground with a bunch of people watching you flail at backing up.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
Next you're gonna be telling us about how you drove henry model T's with carburetors and these damn young whipper snappers and their fancy EFIs are spoiled little shits.

Ha, I'm not quite that old, but I do still own my 1981 CJ7 with a carburetor. I remember when EFI first came out. The first FI systems were more trouble-prone than carbs. A lot of guys would revert back to carbs on those rides. As with a lot of things the tech has improved a bunch. I think many of these nanny driving assist features on new vehicles are in a similar infancy stage of their development.

What these other guys said. I did go through the setup process on mine for kicks, but I've never tried using it. I learned to back up a trailer a long time ago. That's what happens when your dad is an avid bass fisherman and makes you back the boat in even before you have your license, lol. The trick, as others have said, is to use the mirrors instead of looking over your shoulder. For whatever reason when you look through the mirrors it's just a lot more instinctual than looking over your shoulder. I've been backing up trailers for decades and I still turn the wheel the wrong way occasionally.

I know this is an older thread. I have the same issue with my 2024 Tundra. I tried setting up the backup assist twice. The vehicle is not able to detect the trailer. Were you able to get it fixed?

Yes, same here. It seems that the calibration is NOT saved with the trailer profile. When you turn it off either manually or by shutting off the truck and then reenable it with that trailer selected, the backup assist fails to recognize the trailer and suggests a recalibration which fails every time. I could reproduce the problem every time. In debugging this, the only way I got it to work was to delete the trailer config from the garage, set it back up, and go through the calibration again. As long as you don't disable or turn off that feature, it will work. If you turn it off manually or by shutting the truck off it fails. This is clearly a bug.

And if you're ready to respond with some comment about learn how to back up a trailer..... that's not the issue or a problem. This has to do with tech that does not work properly. When it does work, it works well particularly with a small boat trailer that is not visible in the mirrors. The thing is under warranty and I want it fixed.

New to this thread as I was looking for some solutions to this situation. Just purchased a 24 Limited and part of the purchase decision was the back up camera assist (yes, I know how to back up a trailer, but thought this feature was pretty cool). Anyway after completing calibration and set up I couldn't get Tundra to recognize Airstream when I took it for the first trip. Kept saying 'trailer not detected' when I activated the trailer assist button. Took it back to the dealership (with airstream in tow) and after three hours there, the service manager said that of all the campers you had to pick an Airstream. Apparently, Airstreams can't be recognized by Toyota's camera system due to the reflection of the Airstream in the camera system. This causes the Toyota system to not be able to recognize the size of the camper, distance, etc.

This was two weeks ago at the dealership. They, the dealership, were on call with Toyota Mother Ship looking for a solution and apparently there is a small mention of this in the owners manual. Just got a call today from my sales guy (as I told him about it) and he has another customer who found a solution (putting some sort of reflectors on the Airstream), but was planning to be more specific when the customer sends him pictures and such. Hoping there is a solution as this just sucks. Again, I know how to back a camper up, but thought this was a cool feature!

    Crazy for sure!
