Hit my Year mark with my Tundra and now I have to pay $15/mo to be able to use the map/navigation… so stupid! I get monthly payments for other services, but shouldn’t map/navigation come with the vehicle?!
    Rant over.

Can’t you just plug in your phone and use CarPlay or android auto, those are better anyway

Apple CarPlay still works yes, but I do like the Nav the truck has/had.

But most manufacturer are moving towards a subscription based Nav system.

I mean before we had to spent a couple thousand dollars for a navigation system as an option on most vehicles.

Think of this way, if you want it, pay for it monthly. If not, then use CarPlay or android auto. You didn’t pay for the nav system to start.

Look on the brighter side of things. At least we are not getting charged on a monthly basis for wireless CarPlay.

    it is what it is.

Software as a service is the new deal bud. BMW was trying to charge monthly so you could access your heated seats.

I was cracking Renesas M32C on Volvo, with success. Read somewhere Tundra's MCU is Renesas as well, so it can be cracked, too. If I'll be forced to buy a new, subscription-based Toyota, I'll crack it in principle, because I own it, thanks gods, cracking devices for your own amusement is perfectly legit in USA.

Charging for navigation is asinine. My last car (Tesla) didnt charge for it and it charged for alot of things like rear heated seats. I dont mind the subscription option because it gives ppl options if they want to spend on luxury items like heated seats but Navigation should be automatic. If you want to charge for a data connection for live traffic, sure but basic navigation should be free. With that being said, I would use AA all the time anyway and wouldn't use it if it was free.

Maybe users of this post can help me,
JUst picked up a 23 SR5 TRD OR. It does not have the 14" screen, but works with Android Auto. I tried to add Gaia GPS and/or Google Maps to the screen and neither of those two apps show as selectable options from my S23. Yet I have seen people using Google Maps via Android Auto in the tundra. Any ideas? Is this a coding thing?

I do not agree… I paid for a vehicle with navigation. I paid the extra premium for a limited with the premium audio and nav 14” screen. I paid for that when I originally purchased my vehicle. I paid probably $20,000 over the price of the base truck for extra features that weren’t included on the base truck so I didn’t have to add those items later at an extra cost. So now I’ll have this big 14” screen sitting there blank, and have my 4” Garmin bought and paid for with lifetime maps for my navigation.

The best nav app that I have found is Wyze…..it generally tells you where the cops are at too just in case you have a heavy foot

This type of stuff (plus the ungodly increase in new car prices to start with) is why I may never purchase a new car again. For $80k I can find something much neater in a barn or junk yard and refurb it - exactly how I want it. And if it's an old Toyota, it'll be every bit (if not more) reliable to boot!

So I won't have a 60" big screen in the dash, and I'll have to actually drive the damn thing myself, but I can live with that.

I'm not sure how it works on an android, but on an iPhone you have to go to the CarPlay settings on the phone and select the apps you want to use with CarPlay. Google Maps works well via CarPlay on my truck screen. I love using the GPS mode on Google maps with my 14" screen. It's like flying in a helicopter directly over your truck. OnX works OK, but some features are inoperable when using it with CarPlay.

Like others, I found it annoying that a basic navigation program isn't included in the new Tundras. I refuse to pay a subscription to Toyota for one. Google maps works better anyway.

I'm surprised that people are shocked to learn the Tundra NAV is an over the air subscription based system.

Thanks for the reply. Under customization via Android Auto, Maps isnt available. Waze shows. I also don't have the 14" screen... which I've seen videos of using Google Maps. Maybe the issue is Android Auto

Perhaps this will help you. Google Maps should work fine with Android Auto. This video discusses it at about the 4 minute mark

Why are you surprised? My 2015 Tundra came with NAV included. My wife's 2021 4Runner SR5 came with NAV included. Yet my $70K 2023 Tundra requires a subscription for NAV? I realize that software subscriptions are the new way for manufactures to make easy money, but that doesn't make it right. At this rate, soon we'll have to pay a subscription for basic features like.headlights.

    That's a fair point.

I never asked about it, or researched it, before buying my truck. My salesman never mentioned it either. It wasn't until I was driving home from the dealership that I realized NAV wasn't included. I was pissed until I realized how well CarPlay and Google Maps works.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time until CarPlay, Android Auto, Google Maps, Apple Maps, etc...are all subscription based too.

For comparison, Ford charges $80 a year for its connected services. That makes the nav system usable, maintains weather data connectivity, Weather radar and probably other stuff to.

All of it already paid for in the overprice cell phone service.....

Electronics and infotainment are a key point of new vehicles. It's what customers want and many make buying decisions on. People have to do the homework just like 4WD systems, axles ratios and so on.

Pre-pandemic, I used to never spend time in the service department prior to making a purchase. I do now. How long does it take to get an appt, get parts and how many trucks do you have that have taken 30+ days to be repaired. Of course, I learned this the hard way.
    Things change.

I had seen that video when searching. Problem is when I go to customization via my S23, Maps doesn't show as an option. I downloaded Waze, and it allowed me to add it. Id rather use Google Maps
