My 2015 manual says if you are using the 0W-20 that 10000 miles is fine. Excerpt
Your vehicle is certified withGenuine Toyota 0W20 motor oil. ForVEHICLES CERTIFIED FOR 0W20 motoroil, the oil change interval is 10,000 milesor 12 months IF 0W20 MOTOR OIL ISBEING USED. If 0W20 is not available,5W20 mineral oil may be used. However,it must be replaced at A 5,000 miles or6 month INTERVAL with 0W20 motor oil.

There are several topics in this forum regarding this question.... if your engine is FFV Toyota recommends 5k mile oil change intervals. If your engine is not FFV then the recommended oil change interval is 10K miles. There have been several members who have had their oil analyzed after 10k miles and it still had plenty of life.

Thanks for asking this. I was thinking about doing it every 5k, but I may do one at 10k and send it in for analysis. On my BMW, they suggest 15k but I will change at 7.5k or 10k.

FFV here and I change at 10. According to a service advisor I talked to there is no difference in the oiled parts. Just pulled dipstick at 6k and oil is golden.

On the 07-13, a maintenance required light will come on at the 5,000 mile mark. I think the 14 and up has digital display.

On my 2008 5.7 it has had 10,000 change intervals since about 5000 miles on the ODO. I use Mobil 1 5/20 or 0/20. I fit in normal service for the most part. If you do lots of hauling, towing, city driving or dusty roads you will want to shorten the interval or get a used oil analysis.

My cap says 5/30 but my manual says 0/20 or 5/20.
I use 0/20 and change every 5K. Sometimes I will disregard the 5K and go 6-7K.

Much better interior with the Limited. The 07 was fun building it with the best bang for the $, but this go round will even be more fun, and doing the same thing...best bang for the $ and will not only look kuul but will also take me wherever I want to go.

I'm guessing Toyota is playing it safe and recommends changing out 5W20 sooner since they don't test that oil as thoroughly as 0W20 which they can guarantee works properly in the truck.

If "playing it safe" means managing their factory warranty risk then you are correct.

Both are completely capable of 10k oil changes. At operating temp, they’re essentially the same oil. Toyota aint splittin hairs there.

The difference between 5k and 10k oil changes recommendations from ‘Yota is based on usage(heavy/lots of towing, dirt environment etc)or fuel.

Flex fuel(e85) can be brutal on oil. It takes 30% more e85 to operate over gasoline, so over 10k miles, you’re using a lot more fuel, increasing the possibility of diluting oil. Fuel diluted oil doesn't lubricate.

In short, unless your really truckin’ or using e85, changing your full synthetic at 5000 miles is a waste of resources.

Understanding oil is 1st step in answering the question.
Conventional oil has additives to allow it to be pumped easily during those frigid conditions during cold starts. These additives break down over time and begin to clump inside of the engine, around 2500 miles. So called synthetic oil is usually group 4 oil which is conventional oil that has gone through a different refining process to remove sulfur. This so called synthetic oil is allowed to be called synthetic only in the US of A, no other country calls it synthetic. The additives in this oil break down around the 5000 mile mark. True group 5 oil is man made and therefore is recognized as synthetic around the world. This oil can go alot longer, Amsoil says up to 15k miles between change intervals and in ideal conditions even longer.

Science is getting better, presently the additives in conventional oil and so called synthetic oil are getting better and can hold together longer which is making some oil have longer change intervals. I haven't kept up with the brands but if you do some research I am sure you can get info on who makes actual group 5 synthetic oil, it is not much more $$ than group 4 synthetic but it is a superior product.
