What type of oil comes in the truck from the factory? And, given that, does it matter if you stick with it or change? That is to say - should these trucks be using conventional or synthetic?

It's time for my first oil change and I want to hear a bit of discussion

Thank you for your genuine, informative, and heartfelt contribution. I now feel much more knowledgeable and confident in moving forward! Had you not shared this vital tidbit with me, I would be SO lost right now! How silly of me!

Sorry, but this thread IMO is just silly.

What does you truck manual say?
How many vehicles new to the market in the last 10 years have recommended conventional oil?

    General convention

Synthetic ok for a 10k change interval
Convention ok for a 5k change interval

I do synthetic at a 5k because why not

Oh, so we want to have our hand held, do we? Use the damned search feature! Like Sundog said, there are already at least a dozen threads on the information you seek.

I don't remember asking for your opinion on whether the thread is important or not. Nobody asked you shit, actually. If you aren't contributing useful information then leave. I felt that the question was important, therefore I asked it. If you don't like it, then leave.

I don't need my hand held but you can hold my nuts if you'd like

The search feature on this site is about as useful as your brain. That is to say, not at all. You don't think I tried that?

Silly thread is silly. There is no new vehicle available today whatsoever that recommends conventional.

@Sundog is correct. This place is festooned in oil threads and lift/tire threads.

I don't know any aspect of conventional oil that isn't solidly inferior to synthetic. Synthetic flows easier at cold start (and cold temps) reducing wear. It lasts longer which offsets the increased cost. Tundras come with synthetic from the factory and recommend only using conventional if synthetic is not available, and replacing it with synthetic when possible.

No reason not to use synthetic.

Search function works fine, too. Just gotta use the 10% rule.

No impact if changed from one to the other (from the simple act of changing not down the road performance).

They can use either yet one is Better.

You can probably guess which is better based on price, i see conventional for about $16 at wallyworld whereas full synths go for at least 24 or so on up.

Bottom line, mankind makes better motor oil than dinosaurs did for us. We make the molecules even sized, even density, dinosaurs make them all different sizes so they don't lube as well.

If you start off with "high mileage" full synths you'll be even more ahead with extra seal conditioners. Luck deciding.

Toyota recommends SAE 0W-20 for your 2022 according to your manual. Nice truck BTW. So conventional or synthetic doesn't matter (sarcasm), just make sure you get 0W-20.

    They still sell conventional oil?

Seriously, conventional inventory on shelves here has been shrinking since 2006.

I would imagine you would have a very hard time finding a true conventional oil that actually meets the modern standards called for in the manual. Walk down the aisle in Walmart and check for yourself.

Anything that meets API SP/GF-6A is going to be a very good oil and not conventional.
