Absolutely hate having dirt and rock fall between the gap of the bed and the tailgate. I know there are solutions out there but which is the best one? Are they permanently applied or only installed when needed? Which option is best?

I can't answer your question, but this looks like it might be worth something if you have a cap or cover. At least it would look better than my homemade weather strip and sheet rubber.

That is a seal and not a cover for the gap. Not what I was looking for but thanks for looking.

I want that gap cover so I don’t get dirt and rock falling to the ground as I shovel it out of the truck.

I just simply just remove the tail gate.
1 quick electric disconnect.. & pull off the gate. takes less than a minute.

also gives better access to the bed.

What about using a 2' x width of bed piece of rubber sheeting. Place it over the gap with 1/2 on the bed, and 1/2 on the tailgate. Dump some stone in the bed, on top of the rubber sheet to hold it in place and then close tailgate and fill the rest of the load. The sheet will fold 90 degrees to keep the gap covered and the stone will keep it in place. Once ready to unload, lower tailgate and start removing stone. Once bed is empty, roll up rubber sheet and store for next use.

Longer list than the wife needs to know about....
whenever I haul loose rock or gravel, I throw down a tarp before the rock is dumped into the bed. Then I shovel out of the bed until it is lite enough i can roll the remaining material out by lifting on the tarp. Don't get much in the gap doing it this way, and it gives a little more protection to the bed itself. The only downside is you need to secure the tarp after the material has been loaded before you drive to your destination. Its also not the permanent solution you are looking for.

BUMP. Interested in this as well. I had a rock fall between and put a little knick in the bottom of the tailgate. Would have been worse if i didn’t softly start to close it. If I slammed the gate closed I’m sure I would have bent metal.

Tarp is the way to go IMO. Makes cleanup easy and helps protect the liner from excessive wear.
