I originally noticed leaking last year when putting in my catalytic shield.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/what-is-happening-here.116171/

Last weekend I finally took it to my dads and put it on his lift and replaced the tail shaft seal as well as flushed the transmission fluid. I didn't notice any leaking for 2 days, but I just crawled up under the truck and now there is a few drips of red/pink ATF hanging from the tailshaft again.

Im about to take a 1300 mi trip to Iowa and back to get our new camper. I am looking for advice on what to do.

    1) Replace the seal again - maybe I bought a bad one or I didn't install it right?
    2) Put gasket sealer designed for oil/gas around the seal in the tailshaft
    3) Drive it as is and bring ATF with me in case the leak gets worse.

Did you notice any abnormal wear on the driveshaft where it inserts into the tailshaft?

I also believe there is a bushing inside the tailshaft that may be worn allowing too much fluid to get past and the seal may be unable to contain it.

Someone in my old thread mentioned this. I appreciate you confirming it. I did not notice wear, but I also was really focused on the seal and getting the ATF flush done.

So the bushing is also some sort of seal? The actual shaft is not the problem? Any idea on the part number?

The actual tailshaft housing as a unit with bushing and seal should be 35180-04010 and is like $400-450.00.

Here are some photos showing that bushing.

Yikes - no way to replace just the bushing then?

You can, I’m just showing the bushing and where it’s located. It’s easier than just posting the bushing. I do believe you need to remove the entire tailshaft and insert it from the transmission side of the shaft though.

Thank you for the valuable information. Looking into bushing now. I assume there is a gasket of some sort between the tailshaft housing and the end of transmission?

Well I ended up taking it into a shop.

First problem, I apparently did not install the seal correctly. I had it cocked a little to the 11 oclock position. I bought a new seal and delivered it to the shop where they installed it

Second problem, he said the bushing seemed fine, but the output shaft from the transmission can move around. Is it supposed to be able to move or be firm/solid?

At this point it sounds like I need to take it to a transmission shop as the output shaft should not be moving.

I believe the bushing is what helps keep the shaft aligned and from moving too much within the seal. I’m not a transmission expert though. If the shaft is moving too much, I would imagine the seal will continue to leak due to pressure from the shaft. I would also think some lateral movement is expected.

Then it is worth it for me to try to replace the bushing or just the entire housing. If that does not solve it - off to a transmisson shop then.

    Thank you for your help.
