I have a 3k single atv utility trailer. Looking to get new one w more capacity, either single 5k or tandem 7k (14ft likely)

I don’t have experience towing or loading a tandem - just my 7x12.

Are tandems easier or tricker in Either of these aspects?

I get the cost of 4 tires, peace of mind of extra tires, size/load rating difference. But I can’t really find out anything about maneuvering or weight distribution differences between the two

I'm no expert, but I can tell you in my own experience that when towing heavier stuff a tandem axle trailer is FAR more stable. I'd think weight distribution would be better as well.

Tandem axles seem easier to back up as well compared to singles.

^ this is actually the disadvantage IMO. More axles offer more stability at the cost of maneuverability. I like a single axle for my side by side due to the light weight and maneuverability. Wouldn’t like a single axle for heavy or uneven loads.

Watching people try to back up their 5,500 lb boat on their triple axle trailer can provide some decent entertainment tho.

I don’t own a boat for that reason lol

I just find I overcompensate with single axles and a tandem is easier probably bc it’s not near as maneuverable.

I have a dual axle 7x14 enclosed and a single axle 7x14 three place ATV trailer. Really like the dual axle trailer... Virtually no bounce compared to the single axle trailers I have used.

I've never had a blowout with a single axle, but i appreciated the extra axle when i had a blowout on my overloaded tandem.

The maneuvering is what I read was a con relative to single axle. How is it harder to back up? Does it just not respond as easily to putz it slightly one way or another while backing and trying to steer it into a specific spot?

Another article made it seem like you need a scale for tongue weight as it’s more critical. I’ve never had issue w my single. Not sure if anything here to worry

I’m not towing heavy stuff but want to get a load of gravel at times so need more capacity. I’m just a few miles from the pit so it’s not for any large distance

It might be they turn so quick its hard for some drivers to maneuver without overshooting their target. They can cut much sharper than a tandem.

The only time I think DA vs SA would come into play (when backing up) is if one is trying to move a detached trailer by hand (and turning it).

Sundog summed up what I was going to say. A single is easier to move by hand. I have never really noticed much difference when moving a single, dual, triple with a truck. It does scuff the tires more but that’s about it.
I have one single 5x8 and only really use it for light weight stuff. I have a 14’ dual that I use for hauling on a regular basis and never even considered buying a single. I think it’s easier to get the load balanced and like having the extra set of wheels in case of a blowout. But that’s me.

Ahh. I head a tandem stays where you leave it but I never move one by hand since I’m on gravel anyways so wasn’t sure what they meant by that.

I was worried I’d regret a tandem but doesn’t seem to be the general vibe.

You are 100% correct. I tried moving my DA travel trailer by hand it's nearly impossible but my itty bittly HF SA trailer moves around quite easily :anonymous:
