I currently have falken wildpeaks AT3 275/70/r18 E rated on my truck. I was just wondering if anyone knows what the lightest all-terrain tires along with decent performance? What is the benefit of an E rated tire? Is it needed on the tundra? Thanks

E load is not needed on the Tundra, stockers are standard load. The issue- if you want larger than stock tires you are stuck with E load (275/70-18 for example).

I just installed same tires (wildpeak) as you, they are 61lbs in 275/70-18 size. I came from Cooper XLTs, those were 54 or 55lbs. I returned them because they were defective and would not balance.

Anyway, you will be able to find AT tires in the 55lb range in size 275/70-18. That is the lightest I have seen in that size. If that is still too heavy consider going back to 275/65-18 and you will find a ton of tires available, different load ratings available and they are much lighter, in the 45-50lb range depending on what you want/get.

Tirerack or discount tire are great sizes to browse tires by size and the listings will give the weight of each tire, load ratings available, etc.

Thank you! Great info. I love the tires. But my MPG is in the mid 12s now. I’m not sure if I’d see a big bump if I went to the ridge grapplers. I need something decent in the snow as well.

That is about expected MPG with 275/70-18s AT tires, regardless of brand. I have seen as low as 12, usually am in the 12-13 range but I do a lot of city/short trips. It is better on highway only by about 2-3 MPG. Basically you lose 1.5-2mpg going with the larger than stock tire size. One other thing to mention- letting the truck warm up in winter, cool down in summer before driving really hurts the average MPG. The idling kills MPG average. If mileage is a concern, stick with 275/65s in standard load and you will see a few MPG improvement.

Really happy with the Goodyear UltraTerrain, 55lbs on the 275/70. Great traction in all 4 seasons. I prefer E rated for towing/off-road.

I've had the Cooper AT3 XLTs for about 6K miles now and my MPG actually went up from 13ish to 14.3 overall. I drive like a grandpa now, and its like a game to see if I can get the overall average to go up instead of down. Been hovering at 14.3 for about a month now.
I think driving habits have as much or more to do with gas mileage than tire size. Sure, if you go from stock to 37" mudders your MPG will obviously suffer, but going up one size doesn't have to equal MPG loss.

I just read somewhere that the Toyo AT3 275/70r18 weighs 52 pounds. Can anyone confirm??

After a recent flat at odo mile 1500, I am skeptical of the oem SL Michelins for my applications...thinking of going to a higher ply AT staying in stock size 275/65r18...

My local tire guy really likes the Falken Wildpeak AT3w (10ply, E), but I'm not sure I want to go from the oem 40lb to the 60lbs per tire. Is there a happy middle ground somewhere for a truck that does a little bit of everything in moderation?

Michelin LT rated tires are only 51lb. Much lighter than 60

I am running the Bridgestone Revo3 Load Range E ... I have been using these for 20 years, great tires in the E range, not too heavy.

I need the E tires because I drive on logging roads rocked with sharp crushed basalt, which easily puncture regular tires.

I just installed some General Grabber ATX 275/70R18 STANDARD LOAD. These are brand new, and Discount Tire had to call General to get them since they aren't listed on their site yet.

They are on Tire Rack's site though and that says 44 lbs. I do not need E Load tires, so this is great for what I do.

After towing my trailer (4k lbs, another 500lbs in the truck bed of gear) with both OE tires and E rated tires, i have come to the conclusion that on pavement the SL tire is plenty stiff enough with max air pressure. With 50lbs in my rears, it feels fine. Maybe heavier trailers will affect it more.

now offroad I’m definitely more cautious with the oe tires if ripping it on a rock

I was literally just looking into these this morning. How do they ride? How is the MPG compared to stock? I really want to upgrade from my stock 275/65 but trying to avoid taking a big hit on MPG.

Not rocket science, but you can tell a lot about tire mpg just from tread design. Tires with continuous linear grooves around the full circumference generally have the best mpg and are quiet. Blocky Off-road tires with no linear circumferential groove get poor mpg and are loud, but grip well on loose materials. Mixed-use all-terrain tires that many truck users prefer can fall anywhere in between. The Bridgestone Revo3 has a continuous linear groove around the circumference (road-like with some all-terrain benefits), the Cooper AT3 has a nearly linear groove, the Falken A/T3W is less linear (zig zag groove), and the Grabber has zero linear (very blocky, off-road design). I understand that folks want their rigs to look superbad, but no one’s gonna see the tread when it’s rolling ...

Well I've only had them on for 5 days, and a couple hundred miles so my experience is very limited. My observations so far:
    1. Ride - I really like the ride so far. Ride comfort is subjective as some prefer soft vs. firm, but I can say that these take the bumps better than the stock Michelin's and don't feel the least bit "squishy" for being a SL vs. E load.
    2. Noise - The miles I have driven so far have been a lot of interstate (75-85 miles per hour) and road noise is minimal. Yes, there is more noise there than the Michelin's, but on a scale of 1-10 the Michelin's are a 1 and I might put these at a 2 or 3 so still very quiet.
    3. Balance - 1 of the 5 took 6 ounces, the rest took about 2. That 6 oz one seems like a lot, and I am experiencing some shake above 70 so I'm going back on Saturday for a re-balance. Under 70 MPH they're very smooth.
    4. Steering input - Doesn't feel much different than stock to me
    5. MPG - Too early to tell since I only have a couple hundred miles so far, but I am down about 1 MPG so far. Certainly just going up 1 size accounts for about 0.5 MPG when the computer calculates MPG based on the larger size, the rest could be a variety of things.
    6. Speedometer - I used to be a few MPH off at interstate speeds, now it's right on.
    7. Aesthetics - I considered all the other sizes, for months, before picking this one and I can honestly say they look better in person than what the pictures can convey and I'm happy with the choice and don't feel like they're too small.

I feel like I should give an update on these. Discount Tire was unable to get these to balance correctly after multiple tries, so I ended up replacing them with Falken Wildpeaks. A little early to tell yet on the Falkens, but the initial impression is that they are more smooth than the Generals. The guys at my DT didn't have a lot of positive feedback from the Generals either, and said they had previous complaints about vibrations.

I have a buddy who has had issues with multiple sets from discount tire. Is there a possibility that they buy a lower grade of tire? Are tires even graded like that? He had a set of BFG KO2s, which can have issues anyway, and a set of duratracs. Both had issues from DT. He ended up getting a replacement set of KO2s, and the duratrac issue is still ongoing.
