I started noticing an odd smell one day and then a couple of days later found three newborn mice on the passenger floormat of my Tundra. Accessed the cabin air filter and found this. Momma got herself stuck and died. Was fun getting her out

I cleaned it what I thought was good but keep getting a whiff every once in a while and have had it apart two more times since then. What a PITA. Chewed up some of the sound insulation from under the hood to make the nest

That does suck. Maybe a scented filter might help.

This pass summer I set some mouse traps around the engine and in the truck. I only got one in about 3 weeks of trapping. IMG_2724.jpg

Oddly common on this forum. Something about the second-gen ductwork that lets them in easier? or is this just a common thing in some parts of the country?

5 gallon of Kerosene and a fusee will get rid of that smell once and for all.

I had the same thing happen in a Hyundai that I have. I took some mesh and self-drilling sheet metal screws and attached the mesh at he A/C hole under the hood. No more mice living in my cabin filter now.

    Hate when that happens.

I had one keel over in my blower, shook the whole dash when I turned the heater on. Dropped it and out she came. Worthless creatures, but great food for other animals. My chickens beat the buttfucking brains out of one awhile back and ate it. Wish they’d do that more often.

I tried Peppermint oil this year when storing the 124. I'll bet it smells like a candy cane when I get home May.

Where is the peppermint oil placed? Just dousing the cabin filter with it?

After you finish cleaning/disinfecting, definitely recommend doing the screen mod or they'll just continue to get in.

What did you do to drop the fan. I had some rodents make a nest on the cabin filter and when I removed the filter some nuts fell into the fan and it’s shaking the dash when it’s used

    Peppermint Oil for me too.

I use the.dropper and place a few drops under the hood, everywhere I can get too.

Before I park, I turn the vents power to zero. Kill the engine and then turn it back to half or full (in case I use the remote start). I don't know if it helps, but I heard it closes off one more access point for them.

Keep in mind, it is a dog irritant and can be harmful. So keep it away from pets and limit how you use inside the truck.

Watched a youtube vid, I think this one:
    https://youtu.be/GY8cVZwf-Vo?si=MpGy8f5Nh4dMJ4-J
Some plastic popping and a few screws and it came out. Only took ten mins or so.
Edit: saw you have an ‘07 but probably similar deal..

I use small pill bottles with a 1/8 " hole drilled in the cap. One under the car, one under the hood and one inside on the floor mat.

This is my first time doing this so you're going to have to wait until May to see if it works. I'll over a thousand miles away.

The worst is realizing that you've been breathing in dead mouse fumes for weeks...

I got a free car from my dad a couple of years ago. 2007 Chevy HHR that had been sitting under a carport next to a field in the country. Totally infested with mice. Stripped out the interior and scrubbed it with a special de-odorizer solution, changed the cabin filter, which was full of mouse droppings and a dead mouse. Used multiple different "odor bombs" and cleaners and took it to a detailer.

It still stinks. Detailer said that with some vehicles and the type of plastic they use in the interior, you can't get the odor out and have to replace it. I bought a used Subaru to drive, instead.

Thanks for the feedback I probably should have done a YouTube search first thing. There were quite a few videos on how to drop the fan there was one that you remove the glove box door to access a cover when there was another where the cover is below the glove box that is popped out

I live in the country and have had this problem with several vehicles, including a trailer and a garden tractor, where they chewed out wiring and fuel lines. With my 2006 Tundra I had them get into the fuel injector manifold and chew part way through the plastic pipes. Noticed a gas smell in the cab and took the vehicle into the dealer, who found a mouse nest in the well under the air cleaner. The mechanic started the engine and showed me a fine mist of gasoline being sprayed onto the block. He said I was lucky to be alive, as it could easily have exploded. Insurance paid the $1200 bill after my deductible. Peppermint oil does seem to work, but manufacturers need to use components that deter these pests.

If you park your truck outside do yourself a favor and get rid of the plastic motor cover. It just provides cover for nests.
