So after much research I've narrowed it down between these two trucks, probably used '17 or '18. I love the fact that both aren't too techy, have strong V8s that sound great (without cylc. deactivation), are solid, reliable rigs, and come with good options. I've learned to steer clear of American cars/trucks.

    Pros of Tundra
    - more reliable, will last longer
    - better resale value
    - looks better IMO

    Pros of Titan
    - better mileage
    - more affordable used
    - more options for the $$$

My wallet is saying the Titan is a better deal, but my heart is saying go for the Toyota.

What do you guys think? I'm sure I'd be happy with either, but the one thing holding me back from the Tundra is the higher price used, and bad fuel economy (yes I know it's a truck!).

    Thanks,

The Titan definitely has more options than the Tundra. Hill descent control and a locking diff are the ones which stand out. I have not heard any major complaints from their current engine and trans, but the rest of it has been hit or miss. Infiniti's QX56/QX80 has been using that engine and transmission for several years with no major issues. This is going to come down to the test drive. Try both and see which one suits you best.

Common consumer thought process, guilty myself sometimes. 40% off means you saved money....... Wrong. It merely means you SPENT less. So, the Tundra costs more upfront AND is worth more in the end. And, you said, "more reliable", another cost savings. Actual bang for your buck = Tundra IMO.

Well, considering the site you’re on, nobody is going to recommend the Titan, myself included. The fact that the price is higher for a used Tundra is actually pretty good evidence of which is a better vehicle. Nothing will beat a Toyota’s resell value.

That said, my good friend has a Titan, and is very happy with it, though he’s had to have warranty work done on it a few times in the couple of years he’s had it. I don’t know what all issues he’s had with it, but I know he had alignment issues. He had to fight with the dealership, eventually going straight to Nissan. They actually paid for new tires for him. The most telling thing was they had him go to an independent shop to get the alignment fixed, instead of the dealership.

Keep in mind that Nissan is much newer to the full size truck game. They only came out with a true full size truck a couple of years ago. The previous Titan was really more of a mid sized truck, in my opinion. Toyota has a much longer track record with them, not to mention they have been the most reliable vehicle manufacturer for decades.

One other thing - aftermarket items are nearly nonexistent for Titans. My friend has been waiting for some aftermarket headlights to come out for two years. That may not matter to you, but if you are like most of us, and want to customize, you’re going to be much more limited.

Sounds like you want the tundra! If you get the Titan you’ll be always thinking of the Tundra!

And if you get the Tundra you’ll be like f**k ya! :headbang::burnrubber: And you’ll even forget what a Titan is!

Thanks all! I think you all make some good points.

1.) Buyers remorse if I got a Titan. I know for a fact that the Toyota is more tried and true, and that they stand by their products, as Nissan does not.

2.) Aftermarket not a big problem, I just plan on getting the windows tinted and doing an aftermarket exhaust.

3.) The locking rear differential and hill descent are huge for the Titan, though. Would be so helpful off road, or going down snowy roads.

4.) Bottom line is I'm going to have to drive the Titan and compare. We bought our first Toyota (Sienna) for my wife last month and was impressed with the customer service at the dealership. Then a couple weeks later I go to a Nissan dealership, and I walk around the showroom Titan, get in it, look at the window sticker.... 15 minutes later not ONE person comes to greet or acknowledge me. I was so frustrated I just walked out. Know I know it could of have just been the dealership, but if they don't want my business, that means something!

Better resale on the Toyota is because it’s generally considered to be a more reliable vehicle. If this is going to be a short term truck, then you may go with the better deal and the lower price is probably the Titan. (Although, better resale on the Toyota when you sell?) If you plan to keep it until the wheels fall off, you'll probably get more value from the Toyota.

When I was shopping for my truck I looked at every major make. I plan to keep mine for 10 years or so. Safety, space (I have small kids and nothing comes close to the crewmax back seat size in the yota), and long term reliability and how well it held it's value was important to me, more important than the 2-3 mpg differences between most full size trucks. I narrowed to Toyota and GMC and felt the Tundra checked all the boxes. Sure, it doesn't have the tech that the Ford/Chevy's have and I gave up some bells and whistles to get what I felt was the better truck.

It ultimately comes down to what's in your budget, what you feel best fits your needs/what you're looking for, and what you like driving. After all, it's going to be your truck. You're the only one that has to love it.

I agree with some posts I have been a Toyota person for years on #8 now actuall 9 to include a Lexus car. The tundra is more expensive on the front end but also higher on the resale. I do like the fact that Nissan has a diesel wish Toyota would make one as well but the 5.7 is a beast and has plenty of power. I think the styling and features on the Tundra are far superior to the Titan. Just my opinion.

totally agree. I am coming off of a bad purchase on a lightly used truck (major issues). I personally don't want the tech stuff...i.e. engine shutting down at a stop light, 10 gears in the tranny, etc... I plan on keeping my next truck (a TUNDRA) for a very long time and I want reliability, and after many many hours of research Tundra is the one for me! At the end of the day...it is your money. I would do more research if you are unsure, but the reliability makes up for everything imo.

I have a 2017 Nissan Armada with the 5.6 l 8-cylinder. The engine is a beast. The vehicle has been good (knock on wood). My dealer has been good. I had a loose drivers side mirror and they promptly ordered a replacement (it was $1500 for the part with auto fold, auto dimming, heated and had the surround view camera) under warranty.

Nissan paint sucks, but many on here complain about Toyota paint, both a result of environmental laws.

The Titan is ugly on the outside. But the interior and ergonomics is better. Don’t know how they ride.

Go with your heart and get the Toyota. As long as you can afford it, you won't mind paying the extra. My head told me not to trade in a 2013 GMC Sierra with 66,000 miles for an equivalent 2010 Tundra with 109,000 miles with the payment going up $10 a month. I did it anyway and have ZERO regrets!!!!

Well you talk about paint for the Toyota’s I do agree last year on my 2011 CM Rock Warrior was at the dealer for scheduled oil change and I had noticed some blemishes on paint now mine is super white and the dealer asked me to bring my tundra back the following week when a corporate Toyota person would be there. Well I did and they conducted several paint/clear coat measurements and found it to be a Toyota issue and my CM was taken to a paint shop this dealership uses and the problem was rectified immediately. Also the type of Rock Warrior wheels I have are powder coated and require upon removal to be done by hand and not an impact well I also have a 3 piece locking lugs and they (dealer) damaged my tires and this problem was also taken care of immediately, don’t have a lot of good to say about some dealers but the Toyota of Puyallup has done good by me. One other issue I have had with Toyota is My 1990 Toyota truck years ago had a recall on the head gasket well took the recall notice and truck to another local dealer for inspection and found I had serious motor damage due to the gasket problem, they got the truck in and Toyota put in a complete new motor and this truck was a used truck to me with over 175k miles. So it was an auto tranny it started to slip a couple years later I replaced that and had a new truck. Thank you Toyota so as just with these two stories you know why I’m partial to Toyota.

Too many tundras on the road is ruining my resale value. I vote Titan :D

In all seriousness, if you want to keep it stock then go Titan, cuz if you have a tundra and hang around this site, money goes flying out the window :spending:

I might get flamed here for saying this, but I really like the new Titan (with the right trim/color combo). I had two previous Titans (04 & 05), and other than replacing cracked exhaust manifolds on my 05 with long tube headers I never had any major issues with either of them. I have, however, had to have the engine opened up on my year-old Tundra due to leaking cam tower seals, which doesn't really sit too well with me. I'm sure it's probably fine, but even with the issues other mfgs have you don't hear of such a common problem requiring the engine to be broken open. Part of me misses my old Titans, but other than the cam tower problem I've been happy with my Tundra.

Anyway, that's just my two cents, but I think you should just drive both and get whichever one you like the best. Good luck!

It’s funny because before I bought my tundra I was in the exact same boat as you. I narrowed down to two trucks the titan and tundra. I have never owned a Nissan before but have owned a Tacoma. So I went with what was comfortable to me and went with the tundra. Best thing I ever did I love my tundra and it looks much better then the titan in my opinion. Even lifted titans look odd to me.

Believe it or not my co-workers '17 F-150 has more leg room than my '16 Tundra by a little bit. I got out the tape measure and measured the distances between the back of the front seat to the back seat. I think this because the F-150 seat sits more upright and the Tundra back seat is more reclined. Sitting in both the Tundra is much more comfortable. The rear seat in the F-150 is like a bench.

Okay so this is a further question to my original one......

If I get a Tundra I could afford a new one (SR5 TRD Off-Road or Sport), or a 1-2 year old used Limited. The options I would want on the Limited would be the leather interior, plus the dual climate control. A sunroof would be nice, but it's not a need. I think the rear sliding down window makes up for that. Lastly, is it worth getting the Limited for the upgraded JBL system with the subwoofer? Can you get that on a SR5? My wife's Sienna SE AWD has the upgraded JL Audio system and it sounds great IMO.

I would ideally like to buy new, but like I said, I couldn't afford a Limited. If I got the SR5 I could go katzans down the road.

    Ideas?

To answer your JBL question: No, it is not worth it to get a Limited for the JBL. Some quick research will tell you that the "premium" JBL is anything but premium, and it's much harder to upgrade than a non-JBL due to the proprietary amp and connectors.

There may be an inch or so in the leg room, but the Tundra is a full size seat where the Ford is more narrow. I tested by putting my kids big ass carseat in them, and the Tundra had more space in the back after carseats were installed than others. I can still climb into and sit comfortably in the middle between two carseats in my tundra, where with the others I had to remove the carseat to climb in. The carseat fits better in the Tundra (the base doesn't stick out over the edge of the seat). It's my daily driver and I almost always have the kids with me. Their safety and confort is/was important.

What are you thinking about towing, Diesel territory? Get a Titan. All else get a Tundra. My boss has a gas 2017 Titan and was looking at trading in for a Diesel Titan, he was going to lose his shirt with that trade and that’s the dealership telling him it was a good deal.

Has a dealership ever said you're not getting a good deal on a trade?? Every number they ever give you is a "good deal" to them :D.

Thanks, that's good to know. Plus I could always upgrade the stereo and have it sound really good.

So basically if I get the SR5 TRD or Sport, I could upgrade things over time to make it like the Limited? If that's the case, I may save up and get a new Tundra. Does the TRD Sport come with leather steering wheel?

    Thanks
