I bought me a Milwaukee 1/2" drive impact recently and now about to purchase some metric impact sockets . On the fence if I need a deep socket set or if a shallow set will do for basic future maint. on the 2016 Tundra.
Is there any need for the deep sockets on these trucks?

    What
What basic maint are you thinking about? Fluids and other routine maintenance?
Or more like suspension work etc?

I use deep well 7/8" sockets for the lug nuts.

thanks for the replies so far,
yes I always use a deep socket on the wheel lugs , but just wondering if there are any other areas on the truck that would require a deep socket. I dont plan on any suspension work , maybe rear shackles in the future

IMO... Should have a mix of deep and shallow. With the shrinking of engine bays a mix is not a bad idea. If you can only afford a few bits. 10mm, buy a stack of these. They tend to grow legs and run away. 8, 12 and 14mm, should check the majority of needs. Atleast in my tool box they seem to have the most wear among the rest.

I think they use them on the oil pan drain plug and the filter housing at the stealership
Sound like you got a real nice lug nut changer
Buy a nice deep lug socket and spend the rest of the money on a torque wench your bound to over tighten the nuts with that beast

I do have hundreds of other tools (most SAE) including a torque wrench, I agree on metric 10mm-14mm being used the most used , but just wondering where else a deep socket might be needed .
I am not going to buy a full set of short and deep as 99% of them might never be used

Why buy an impact if you think you only need 1 set of sockets?

You may as well be better off with an adjustable wrench.

    Jk.

You should get both shallow and deep chromium -vanadium sockets as well as actual impact sockets.

I have metric chrome sockets and wrenches.
I have an impact because I have some 60's muscle cars and a car trailer, and use it often because I got rid of my air compressor and air tools , I do have SAE impact sockets.
As the original post states im looking to buy some metric impact sockets for the tundra,
and my question was, do I really need deep sockets on anything but the Lug nuts.
    thanks

I'd go with the the lug as the only deep really needed here. If you happen to run into one, add it to your list for next trip to HF.

    Very little so far
For regular maintenance items I can't think of any time I've needed a deep impact socket for the Tundra. I think I only own one, a 22mm, which I think I needed years ago for a tacoma suspension swap.

It's been said already but as cheap as HF is, get you both kinds (shallow & deep). I have a stout set of Pittsburgh deeps that run from 11mm to 24mm and they haven't let me down.

Harbor Freight has the Quinn 1/2” master impact set for around $180… pretty good deal for covering all your bases. Unfortunately most of the smaller
Pittsburgh and Quinn sets skip sizes which gets really annoying when you actually need an 18mm impact socket (GM)

Really what you want for general use is the M12 ratchets. Thank me later.

I think you’ll probably need it for your torque wrench.

I have seemingly every tool imaginable and I still mostly use hand tools for everything. The battery impacts are phenomenal but they are unforgiving. Lot of power and good at breaking or stripping rusty fasteners. And just when I think I have everything I find something else I didn’t have and couldn’t live without. Buy quality stuff…then you won’t have to buy twice.

Even the quality (name brand) items aren't as good as they once were. Snap-On, Craftsman, etc... I've seen numerous posts in my tool groups on FB where a newer more expensive tool broke and nowadays these companies won't warranty them or they'll drag their feet on a replacement.

Even for maintenance, you'll need deep and shallow. Don't cheap out on sockets, they will crack/break. Yes, I have some HF, but I have better ones too. I prefer redundancy, so I carry SAE/metric in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2. I have carried my 1/2" Dewalt impact on some trips but just easier to carry a cheater bar.

FWIW, carry a couple extra lug nuts and a couple spare lugs. I've even been known to replace my coils/radiator hoses, and carried the old ones as spares...ask me how I know

Funny, even the swap meets are now charging a lot more than they use to for random sockets, etc. I recently found a lady selling a brand new set of Husky ratcheting box end wrenches. SAE, I think set had 10 wrenches, $20. I grabbed that

Get 10mm deep, shallow, 6-pt, 12-pt, and magnetic deep and shallow. You’ll use them all. And lose a few.
