Had not started my truck in about two weeks and it gave a message to touch the key to the start button first. After that it has been fine as usual.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

I'd have to look in the manual. I know there was something in there on how to do it.

There's been a few threads on this issue. A common denominator is this often happens when you use the phone app to unlock the truck. Is that what you did?

There's also a FOB health check in the app that you should check out.

Negative, I really don't use the app at all. Just looked at the health check you mention and it states that all is good.

Had this happen once in the last 3 months since purchase. The only thing out of the ordinary was wife stayed in truck while I went in the store. She locked when I left and unlocked when I returned. I have no idea if that caused the problem tho.

It definitely seems related to locking/unlocking the doors, but I haven't seen a definitive answer, yet.

I've also read that when you get this message, if you use the FOB to lock/unlock the doors, the message will go away and the truck will start without touching the FOB to the start button. I've never had this problem, so I can't confirm.

None of those scenarios apply. The only thing different was that my truck had not been driven for a couple weeks. Maybe it defaulted into some security mode????

It’s an ongoing issue with my truck. I’ve been to the dealership now twice with a battery replaced and then an update on software. They said it was fixed but it did it twice Friday. I will be going back to the dealership again and this is now the new remote that is doing it. I keep video’s of it as well, so I can make sure they know it’s happening.

My truck sat a month last winter when I was in the Cayman Islands and it fired right up upon return. In short order it will be sitting for February

Thanks for the info. When you say battery, cranking battery or the fob battery? Ive driven it about 10 or so drive cycles since and it hasn't done it again.

This happened to me once and it was the same situation where I had the wife locked in the truck but I had the fob. Also after the big android update I had to enter my pin number right after and only once.

If a passenger locks truck from inside when driver leaves vehicle it will require a key press to button everytime to start. Security feature but very annoying

Historically Toyota push button start system uses several oscillators (in outside door handles and a couple in the interior) that emit very short range RF pulses every couple seconds (can be heard with an old school little AM radio tuned off of a station held up to one of the oscillators) the system then "listens" for a response from an in range fob with the correct rolling code. My understanding of the system is after several days this pulse goes from every couple seconds to every 8-10 seconds and after more time elapsed less than that to eventually not signalling at all for reducing vehicle battery state of charge depletion while vehicle is not being used for a period of time.

The other way around is if the fob is left inside vehicle continuously or for long periods of time it will eventually stop responding to the vehicle as well to help preserve its little internal lithium battery. The "hold the fob up to the start button " is the fail safe system used if the battery in the fob was dead or whatever just like the conventional key start systems utilizing immobilizer NFC chips in the keys.

Makes complete sense. Key fob battery was recently changed within the last couple months. With that said, I did notice while driving, until recently, that the message stated "battery charging" while stopped instead of the ole push harder message. The info you provided, very plausible. Thanks

This is good to know. I live in the boonies and always leave my FOB in the truck when it's parked in my garage. It will often sit for a week or so without being driven. It sounds like I should start bringing the FOB inside with me.

Yeah so they replaced the fob battery.
Didn’t make a difference on the original fob.

Mine did this the other day. I locked my doors via the Toyota app, then started it from there as well to warm up before jumping in. We get in and I need to touch the FOB to the start button to start the truck.

Did the exact thing several days before this, and started up like normal. Just hop in and start back up just by pressing the button. Truck is maybe 2 months old
