So I'm about to move 60 miles from where I live now. I'm thinking of renting a uhaul trailer to reduce the amount of trips. I've never towed before.

Question- what are the benefits of using the tow/haul button and can even use it for long periods of time? Loads shouldn't be heavy.

Tow haul mode adjusts your throttle mapping to make your accelerator much more responsive. People here refer to it as tow haul ass mode. It also holds gears longer for more solid shifting. You can use it whenever you’d like. No harm other than to your MPG.

Use it. Will not hurt your MPGs and will make towing much better. You also might want to manually shift to S5. Whether you do or not depends on load and terrain. Hilly terrain definitely use S5. Flat if towing over 3000 and or high profile. I tow a 5000 lb boat and always use it.

How do you have a more dynamic throttle leading to higher RPMs and holding lower gears longer without using more fuel?

Probably due to load mapping. Personally I get better fuel economy in tow haul mode than without it. Trucks got some added weight, lifted, 35s, etc.

Just because you hold gears longer and drive at a higher RPM does not directly correlate to additional fuel being used. Load is an important factor to fuel injector duty cycle.

Something weird is going on to get better MPG at higher RPMs in lower gears. I’m not doubting your real world experience I just don’t get it on paper.

ETA afterthought, if it gets better MPG why isn’t it the standard programming? Or is it only better MPG because you’re lifted on 35s?

    My rational,
With 35s my torque band has changed, the curve has shifted higher in my RPMs. By utilizing higher shift points, I utilize the powerband more effectively.

@AZBoatHauler - on another, but similar topics as well. There is a happy median when accelerating. Too light on the throttle, the longer it takes the vehicle to get to speed. Too heavy, well obviously fuels being dumped. At speed (within reason obviously) the engine is working most effectively, finding a happy middle ground on accelerating can also help save fuel.

I'd have to take some time to research, but I thought I recall coming across some testing / studies on some of these topics.

I can see where with a constant increased load avoiding all lugging that happens at low RPMs could help efficiency.
Waiting to see you at the lake some weekend. At Roosevelt now. You ever get out this way?

    Gahhh, looks awesome!

I'm only ever out there without the boat lol whether it's 4peaks up and over or long way home from Payson.

We have been thinking of renting a place in either Tonto basin area or SE end for a long weekend. Hard to make those plans right now though :(

I hear you. If you ever head to Apache or Roosevelt let me know. It’d be fun to chat and have a beer at party cove / under the bridge. And get a pic of the Tundras of course.

I have experimented with it on a 160 mile drive that i often do in hilly terrain. I have noticed same to improved MPGs on that drive. The problem is is Texas you have to account for the wind direction and velocity. On drive a strong headwind can make a 2 mpg diff.
