I've been debating on this for a long time. I was originally sold on the Cooper AT3 XLT's in 275/70/R18, but then realized that they're a 9 inch tire. The wheel I'm looking at (18" Fuel Vector or Tactic) only supports up to an 8.5 inch tire. So, if I want the Coppers, I have to go up in tire size to use the wheel and tire combination, which also requires a lift/level.

The alternative I've been looking at is the Toyo Open Country in 275/70/R18, which will work with the 9 inch wheel. They're also a tad bigger (33.23 vs 33.4), which I like.

I want a great tire that gives me offroad capabilities (not hardcore, just some dirt road riding) as well as great highway speed (I like to go 85 mph) while also being quiet as possible. Oh, and I want to do it on stock suspension as I wait for the Falcons. I know, tough combination.

So, all that being said, do I pull the trigger on the Toyos or wait, save up, and go the Cooper route?

    Thanks for the input!

Plenty of guys one here have ran 275/70r18 tires on 9 inch rims. Nothing bad will happen so I wouldn’t make that the deciding factor. I have a set of coopers which I have been happy with and the XLTs get nothing but great reviews.

I wouldn't think that 1/2" difference would be an issue. As said, should be fine.
And I love my Cooper XLTs.

I’ve had both. Last time I went with the Coopers due to the lower cost, but now that Discount Tire has Toyos I think they are a similar price. Can’t go wrong with either of them.

I’m pretty sure the Fuel wheel can run a tire bigger than 8.5” wide, unless the wheel is only 5” wide.

There will probably be some discount all over the internet on the 4th of July. Both tire manufacturers produce quality tires. I don't see anything wrong with trying new tires. It will be a lot easier for you find information about the tire model that you are planning to buy by reading reviews online.

Let me clarify. The Fuel wheel is a 9 inch width wheel, but the specs on Cooper XLT in the 275/70/R18 says it's for a 7.5-8.5 wheel width. I can go to a slightly larger XLT and it will take the 9 inch width wheel.

Toyo ATIII have been excellent so far (4K). Look great, ride fantastic and are quiet. Very pleased.

I’ve had both on my GX and the Toyos ride better and quieter.
