    Toyota remote start sucks!
The remote start feature occasionally doesn’t work.
The remote start and distance for just unlocking and locking is only about 2 car lengths, and yea the engine shut off when you unlock the doors is silly.

Anyone found a better solution for the remote start?

Mine just quit for some reason as well… key fob works no problem but the 3 clicks and hold on 3 won’t do anything for me! I’m not a fan either!!

I think I’ll go aftermarket. I just want a little direction before I start researching.

    :notsure:

So what part of it sucks? Did it stop working randomly, do you not like the vehicle shuts off after running and you have to restart to drive, is it different from a previous system you had on another brand, you really don't provide any information for anyone to help you.

Sorry you are having issues and hopefully you find a solution.

Accessorides long range kit with takeover has worked incredibly well for me. 2-way fob feedback if I'm out of visual range of the truck, and no engine shut off when the doors are opened.

The whole shut off when opening the door sucks. Not sure why Toyota does this.

Shutting off is pretty dumb, if I could just get mine to work in general! No new
Mods, just up and quit working. Maybe it’s the LED bulbs? I’m Under warranty so I’ll have the stealership check it out…

I always found that the sequence of trying to make it work is real touchy. Timing has to be just right.

Yeah it’s worked since the day I bought it, but last week, just up and quit. I haven’t used it all summer but now that it’s getting cooler….

I agree with the OP. The truck shutting off when you grab the handle is not good engineering.

I have a Viper Alarm system (PO installed it). PO gave me a beat up Viper remote for it that wouldn't hold a charge (so it was useless). So I bought another remote for $50 on Amazon, and went and had BestBuy program it (for another $30).

This thing works great, and the BestBuy guy got it to work with my key fob too, so I don't have to carry the Viper remote anywhere with me. Just 3 clicks of Lock button in a row (no hold needed) and she fires up and stays running for up to 12 minutes, even if doors are opened.

I've honestly given up on these things. It never lasts long enough, the door open thing, having to be locked and on and on (okay that's probably all the problems). I just get my ass out of the house and walk through the snow and press the button in the truck, then I go back inside and have a coffee. Usually done at around the same time.

I don't go anywhere or do things really, so never tried to use it from a restaurant or something.

My GMC and Ford do not shut off.

I would have to say it was a stupid design.

I've had good luck with mine. I would rather that it didn't shut off when you open the door, but honestly, I don't see it as a big deal. You just get in, put your foot on the brake, and push start.

For the other factory systems I've used, mainly Infiniti and Nissan, they don't turn off when you open the door (admittedly better) but you still have to get in, put your foot on the brake, and push start before you can take it out of park and be on your way, so it's the same steps/effort required. Not sure if the aftermarket ones require this.

Remote start from key fob is no better in Gen3.
Limited range and it’s very fussy on how you do the three clicks.
I rarely get it right on the first try.
My wife’s Avalon is just as bad. Takes her 5+ tries to get it started.

Starting from the app is flawless but my one year anniversary is next week so that feature will disappear.

have to wonder if its intentional. With some of the tech they have in these trucks, well, the answer is 100% yes, it's intentional.

I installed a 12 volt solutions remote start on my Tacoma a week ago. It seems really nice. Best part is it comes with a complete wiring harness that you don't cut a single wire in your vehicle to install it. I don't have one in my tundra because I do not drive it in the winter.

I have a 2021 with the Premium audio but I only get 10 years of Service Connect included. My Remote Connect was complimentary for 3 years (same as Destination Assist and Safety Connect).

My understanding is that the after market solutions will not work if you have a push button start. Is this incorrect?

I think in the earlier days it was like that, and I've seen that issue when I had a taco in 2016. Looks like they have improved on that.

agreed with @bucketlintels02 on this. Indeed you can use aftermarket remote starter now that will have take over where it won’t shut off if door is unlocked or opened. i, myself, use the Compustar DC3 unit with idatalink TL7 t harness. It does not shuts off when door is opened. But it does have a delay with the smart unlock.
Example. I remote start the truck. Truck is lock.
Key in pocket. Walked up to truck, reach hand on handle. It should unlock right away. But it doesn’t, there is a small delay. Maybe by 1-2second compares to if the truck was not remote started. Im nit picking here. But other than that. Works fine. Gets in, step on brake and start driving away with it shutting off.

I always use the app. Works flawlessly. Used it on my Camry for a few years with no issues also. Yeah it costs money, but it’s 8 bucks, come on now.

The turning off when you unlock the door does blow, but I’ve had too many bad experiences with aftermarket remote starts to change.

that mentality is whats wrong with America. Something that was always free now costs money, and we just say "come on man who gives a damn, waste that money and feed the corpos"
