Anyone have any scoop on if/when Toyota will come out with a heavy duty version of the Tundra?

They aren't interested in even trying that category from my understanding.

Toyotas last HD truck. A whopping 5000# towing. But an impressive 2600# payload.

    You just wait
When I was at a Toyota dealership about a month ago a salesman told me that they were going to be making an HD tundra, and he said it so confidently that I almost believed him for about half a second.

Box the crewmax frame, throw that axle under it with some ridiculous leaf packs and BAM.

I used to do HVAC and we had one as a work truck. Stake bed, it was great, small, could load all equipment in bed, cranes pulled stuff straight from truck.
It was not fast, it was loud, not to comfortable, A/C cranked in that little cab. For a work truck it excelled.

Not gonna happen due to the strict emissions. They were going to have one a few years ago but due to quickly changing emissions laws it wasn't financially feasible. They've changed gears and are now concentrating on hybrids.

Before they do a diesel they might think about a very high line Lexus version with next level interior materials. Tahoe to Escalade badge management. Price it just under Denali Ultimates. Easier to develop. Easier to market to their base. Better margins from the jump.

how about we start with just giving the non-hybrids the GVWR of the hybrids and call it a payload package.

    low hanging easy fruit.

you would then have a loaded crewmax platinum with almost 2K of payload on the sticker, not some BS marketing 2K thats only for the stripped out base truck.

You mean like the capstone? But with the Lexus refinements vs whatever the heck they were thinking when they designed the interior of the Capstone?. I would start with the drivetrain and put a true AWD capable system. Ditch the ridiculous Lexus grille though. Basically an LX600 with a bed. Would be cool. Over the top for me though.

Would be interesting if Toyota developed an HD truck that operated similarly as a locomotive; electric motors driven by a turbo gas generator (rather than diesel). Could give them all the torque in the world for moving heavy loads while not having to deal with diesel emissions.

I'm no engineer, so I suppose my idea won't work due to size/weight of required components. Also because I'm sure someone else has already thought about it, researched it, and deemed it not practical/feasible. Still a neat idea IMO.

Check out "Edison motors" they are doing just that, and making retrofit kits to do that to older trucks

Or does the all-electric thing close the gap over the next 5 years? I'm all for burning fuel, but I feel there is so much more room to improve EV HD trucks.

not going to happen in 5 years.

when you tow heavier, in cold weather , and/or with a larger load, the tech just isn't there. Its just not going to be there in 5 years as far as a production truck or infrastructure to support it

I figured as much, but still curious to see where this goes. We are printing ceramic parts at work, and it still blows my mind how fast this tech reached our industry.

Hydrogen fuel cells are the preferred method for the Japanese, the infrastructure is the limiting factor in that becoming the reality.

Let's see what the true world numbers are for the Caterpillar pickup truck slated to debut in 2025. If it's got any considerable towing capacity over my 24 I may have to trade it in. If it were only true.

That is totally bogus since it would require two types of spare tires to make this work (front is not compatible with rear duallys).

In the game of what I want but won't happen- $8K more for GVWR+ edition. Bump the GVWR up. Bigger brakes. Upgrade the switch gear and interior materials to Lexus LS quality. No cheap radio knobs. Top flight durable leather and door panels. Decontent the 1794/platinum electronics. No radar cruise, lane tracking, collision avoidance. Lose CarPlay. Screen that does and media side by side with bluetooth phone. Ditch auto temp on the HVAC for blue to red temp control and manual fan speeds. Lower features and higher quality. 6/72 warranty with scheduled maintenance included for warranty period. Doesn't make business sense but I'd buy it.

Diesels- do a technology transfer on the hurricane similar to the partnership on Aisin. I don't know if the Hurricane is hardened.
