I have a 2015 Crew Max. Several years ago I had a brake controller installed by a trailer shop. They mounted it low and left of the steering column. I hated it. It looked awful and I constantly banged my knee on it. After selling our camper, I took it out.

Fast forward to today- I bought another camper and need a brake controller. I researched a bit this time and I’m reading that the wiring harness is pre-wired on the right side of the steering column behind the switch panel and is basically plug and play.

I popped off the switch panel and I think I found the connector for the brake controller, but it was already connected to another connector. One of the install write-ups mentioned having to unplug this connector in order to plug it into the newly installed brake controller.

Here’s my question: what was this connector plugged into, and what are the consequences of me unplugging it and plugging it into a different component? Each write up I’ve read and YouTube video I’ve watched says this is plug and play and the connector is already installed, but I’m nervous about undoing something without knowing what I’ve actually undone…

    Anyone have experience with this?

I had a 2015. It is plug and play.

I still have the harness, a p3 controller and the dash kit from ESP truck. It is sweet! I will make you a deal. I can take pictures tonight.

Figured it out. Amazing how much difference a little sunshine makes… this morning I could see that the factory harness was plugged into the wire loom left over from the first aftermarket install. Got the IBC and panel heading my way and it looks pretty straightforward

I had put an IBC in my 2015. It only kinda worked. I did not mention the IBC before because I did not think you were headed in this direction. Sorry.

You will need to have your truck reprogramed at the dealer as a 2016. There was code added for the IBC in 2016 that was not in the 2015 truck. All of the dash displays will work and you will think it is working. Sadly, it does not.

The trailer brakes would work at lower speed but the controller would not amp up the braking as speed increased. This resulted in very weak trailer brakes even at the highest setting.

The dealer said that they could do it but they wanted something like $400. I decided to skip this because at the time many others were complaining about the IBC not working very well. I purchased another P3 because it worked great. I still had the ESP truck dash kit to back in the P3 went.

I have a P3, the ESP dash kit and an IBC if anyone wants them. The IBC in my 2021 works great.

    Proceed with caution.

Well, dang. That is disappointing. Thanks for the heads-up. I got it from Amazon and I have to admit the ad says "2016+", but tons of the comments and reviews noted that it works just fine in their 2015. Now I can see why…

Another $400 is more than I’m willing to pay. I’ll PM you about the P3 and panel.

I just ordered a Redarc Tow-Pro. It’s as close to a factory look as I’m gonna get. And it’s cheaper than the IBC I’m returning to Amazon

Sorry to bump an old thread, but did you sell the P3 and dash kit?

I did not. $100 plus shipping sound fair?
    Do you want some pictures?
