    Hello
I am writing to see if anyone has any information on "topping off" transmission fluid. Long story short, oil change place mistakenly drained 3 or 4 quarts of Transmission Fluid from my 2020 TRD Pro during the oil change. They offered to top it off. I told them no and had it towed out. I am told that topping off can cause more harm harm than good (dissimilar fluids, may not be the correct fluid etc) and that the right answer is drain and fill. Thoughts?

    Too many, but not enough....
It's essentially a drain and fill. No problem at all assuming correct WS fluid used.

Thanks Max. Can the fluid be inspected from the engine bay or is that done at the transmission, i.e. under the turck?

Where was it towed? If you don’t want to go through to rather detailed process of adding and checking the fluid have a Toyota dealer deal with it.

Friends don’t let friends take their trucks to quick lube oil change places.

You have to pin the thermostat, get the atf between 99-109F and then pull a check plug on the pan under the truck. I wouldn’t start it 4 quarts low - I’d replace what they say came out then check it. 4 quarts would be about right if they didn’t realize in the first 30 seconds the fluid was red and put the plug back in.

Thanks. It has been towed to the dealer and not started. No more quick lube joints for me.

Let me reiterate it. The transmission fluid level check is a very detailed process. It's got to be done By The Book. If you have confidence in the dealer you're at then that's the way to go. Though you'd be wise to write down the steps/elements of the process described above by AZBoatHauler and then quiz the service department manager (not the service writer) to up your confidence level. Or...........to call another tow truck.

    Best of luck.

Here's an example video that shows the process. I would note that all the shifting shown in the video to get to the correct transmission fluid temperature can be done with a laptop and the correct Toyota software....which a dealer likely has.

Thanks. I appreciate it. A good friend of mine works there at the dealer. We are doing a drain and fill, do the same steps apply or is that a little more straight forward? Thanks for the info. Can wait to see what the oil change place has to say about the e-mail I just sent. I really think they just wanted my truck out of the way so the bay could start making money and people wouldn't have the optic of my truck getting pulled straight out of a bay.

It's not just a drain and fill. For your circumstance you must do the level check too. Not doing so is foolishness of the highest order. Why am I wanting to believe that a Toyota dealership service department should be accomplished and well practiced at the procedure??
