I'm going to be replacing the transmission filter soon and was curious what the pan bolt size was since I've heard they like to snap.

    Anyone happen to know?

    Bump.

I attempted this today.... tried 3 bolts.... broke 3 bolts and stopped...

I'm not even sure I can get a bolt out to measure them haha

TIS states that it's a 4.4mm bolt but doesn't say how long.

4.4 is the Nm for the torque specification, not how big the bolt is :-/

The torque specs are in the parenthesis. For example 39in pounds for this bolt.

Sorry mate, your wrong. See image below indicating it is N.m outside the parentheses.

all but three are thru bolts (meaning the length doesn't have to be something specific if its continuously threaded to point). Wish i had a number for you for length. The blind bolt holes (the two in the back most likely won't snap for sizing purposes)

When i did this "dance" i didn't realize you could cut the top few threads off the bolts and that you could have used penetrating oil on the threads a few days before attempting. I would have done that first prior to attempting to remove by just snapping.

I'd consider leaving the pan in place while you fix the snapped bolts too (otherwise you will be continuously showered with tranny fluid).

yeah... I assumed the rears were blind which is why that was the 3rd one I snapped... at that point I just wanted a bolt to measure.

I might have enough threads on the broken heads (2 or 3?) to get the pitch off one... and should be able to measure the length because they are through hole. (which I didn't realize until I was under there or a would have sprayed them with oil first)

good tip on leaving the pan on... I probably wouldn't have thought of that.

When i did this i snapped all but the blind ones, spend some quality time with tranny fluid running down my head (I had a lift which was very helpful. On the last bolt i realized the threads sticking up and realized i had wasted time trying to pull rust through the holes.

I was able to drill and extract without tapping.

No need to replace your filter, fix the bolts and change the fluid. I broke one of mine off and had to drill, tap, and helicoil it. The filter had virtually nothing in it at 173k miles. The transmission will give out long before filter.

Are there threads or did just the bolt head snap off? If so go to a hardware store with it and use one of their testing things on the bolt aisle to match it up.

It appears to be a m6x1.0 25mm long.

I have 2 threads on one of the heads that I compared to another bolt and then counted the number of threads from a picture online :p close enough to have replacements on hand for round 2.
