Transmission pan fluid capacity

    Hello I know the topic has been discussed before but I can’t seem to find the transmission oil capacity for the transmission pan only for 2010 5.7 4x4. I’m planning to do the drain and fill but since my transmission has been leaking through the drain plug I’m not sure exactly how much to refill the pan with. Also previous owners has stripped the transmission pan and any advice for removing the pan with out breaking bolts would be appreciated

    If I remember right it's like 2qts, maybe a little more. I'd have someone confirm that, since you've been leaking you should go through the fill process to set it correctly since draining and filling what's in there will end up low. There's posts and YouTube videos of how to set the level, but essentially you let the truck idle until the pan reaches a certain temperature (around 120) and then open the top drain bolt and let it trickle out of that. You can use a thermometer, an OBD2 reader, or Toyota has a method of shorting out two wires in the OBD2 port and the truck will let you know when it's in the right range.

    As for the pan, if the drain plug hole is what's stripped either buy a new pan or drill the hole out and tap it and run a larger bolt or put an insert in, I would just run a larger bolt. As for removing the pan, the issue is some of the bolts go into through holes and the end of the bolt protrudes out the back side of the pan and that end of the bolt can get nasty and make it hard to remove the bolt. Some people say heat helps, I personally had no issues pulling the bolts, but I would spray the ends of the bolts with penetrator or cutting oil to make them a bit more complacent at a minimum.

    Trailer brake. Limousine tint in rear windows. Ultra Gauge "Blue". Toyota bed mat and bug deflector.
    Drain and measure what you take out. Be sure to wire brush and spray the pan bolts, especially the ones that go all the way through the pan. Do that a day or two ahead of time. If I remember right, it was 4-6 qts?

    If I lift my front end on ramps, I get out 4qts. Have done 3x drain and fills on mine.

    Is the threading for the drain plug stripped? Or just some of the pan bolts?

    If the drain plug threading is still in tact and the pan itself isn't leaking, you may want to consider not pulling the pan.

    Hey sorry for the confusion either the pan or the transmission drain plug are stripped( not sure which one yet as I haven’t actually pulled the plug) so I went ahead and bought a new pan and gasket just in case, if I find that the pan is fine and just the bolt was stripped then I’ll leave the pan alone and just replaced the drain plug but I highly doubt the drain plug got messed up Instead of the thin gauge pan

    So all went well with the pan replacement I dropped the pan and only broke one bolt which came out with a lot of free all and vise grips, my question now is does anyone know where exactly the fill port is on a 2010 Toyota Tundra 5.7 4x4, I believe it’s on the passenger side but it’s hard to access with the 4x4 drive shaft, is this it or is there another fill port?

    The fill port is on the driver's side. You always open the fill port first before doing any of this. If it doesn't come out, it will be a struggle to refill.

    You can also do it the ZF way and shove the fluid up into the overflow tube on the pan, but that's a messy pain in the ass.

    So I did the transmission drain and fill, and was able to put the truck in temperature check mode for the transmission fluid, but can’t seem to get any fluid out of the check drain when I pull the plug to check level. I have gone step by step as tsb requires with the paper clip trick but still can’t seem to get fluid out of that port, any help or ideas?

    If you’re not getting any fluid out of the overflow check plug,then you are low on fluid. You need to add more. My drain/fills have been about 4qts out. I always put 5 in so I’ll be sure to have some come out of the overflow when it needs to be checked.

    I plan to do this soon, like next week.

    Figured I would measure how much comes out, and then refill with the same amount plus an extra quart.

    Since SWGA says he can get close to 4 quarts out, I think I'll grab 5 quarts.

    Did you use the paperclip/OBD method for temperature check? Any tips?

    I used the paper clips method without issue.



    I just did the whole trans drain/fill/pump out through the cooler line 2 weeks ago. Here’s a picture of what line is used for reference

    Prior to that, I just did 2 drain and refills about 30k apart from each other. I always got right about 4qts out. Not 3qts it’s never been that low.

    244,000 miles the transmission still shifts like butter

    I use Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic ATF. I bought 4 gallons for a complete refresh. I pushed out 4qts and refilled 4qts at a time. With the last fill,I put in 5 qts. I waited a few hours for the car to get completely cold then did the paper clip check. Don’t forget to pin your thermostat open per directions if you go this route.
