Intermittenly my 2015 Crewmax Check Engine light comes on, displays "Traction Control Off", and reverse camera won't come on when reversing. I bought myself a code reader today, which gave me Code P0705.

Okay, it looks like I need to replace the "Transmssion Range Sensor", aka "Gear Position Sensor". Looking at the online schematics, it is located at end of engine block or at the front end of transmission on the driver side.

Could someone tell me the best way to access this sensor, before I start ripping out in pieces?

    Thank you

The replacement part finally arrived. I installed the new neutral switch (transmission range sensor) and the backup camera comes up and the "traction off" light went away. Let's hope it will stay away.
Probably most challenging part is removing the old one off. But it came be done with a bit of patience and preservance.
Here are the pictures showing where the sensor is located. While you are down there, I replaced the braided grounding wire. Mine was corroded and severed.

@gchliu Thanks! Pix are excellent. I am going to try this myself. Can you let me know where you ordered the part and also how long did it take you to do the change?

I got my Toyota OEM neutral sensor from Amazon. You can get knock-off ones much cheaper, but why take chances. I say it took me about 2-3 hours, not counting coffee breaks and socializing. Please note that I had to jack up the truck and placed two jack stands. Otherwise there's not enough clearance to work under. As well, I had to use a plumber torch to loosen the old sensor. Removal was the most time consuming part of the job. You might have a better luck than mine.

    A couple of notes -
    1) make sure the new sensor is properly seated before tightening any nuts because the threaded insert part is made of soft tin-like material. So you only get one chance !
    2) make sure the nut the that sticks out from the transmission is in "N" position and corresponds to shift stick in "N" position, when installing. Of course, I am assuming your Tundra has automatic transmission.
    3) after installing the new sensor, you want to disconnect the battery for a minute or so. This clears the old fault records in the memory.

I am happy that everything is back to normal. Reverse camera now kicks in every time. And no more check engine light.

    Good luck !

This is great info. I ordered the oem part from Amazon and I am crossing my fingers that I can get this done on my own. I’ve got the jack and stands and unfortunately jack up some vehicle every couple of weeks lol. It’s an automatic transmission too. Those notes r the best because i sure can be overzealous on tightening things lol. I will be sure to grab some coffee in b/w too. A few hours doesn't seem so bad. And I will also be happy the backup camera comes on everytime too. You are a lifesaver! Thank u!

Question for you. Did you have the vehicle in neutral when you removed and replaced the gear selector switch?

Hey folks, first post. Every since I bought my '13 Tundra, 87K, is has always drove me crazy 'gear' hunting. Constantly downshifting/OD shifting. Finally started getting 4lo,trac off, check engine etc. As an Industrial Maintenance Technician, I don't just 'replace' parts but troubleshoot everything. The P0705 code is generic for many makes and models and several things can trip this code. After exhausting all possible solutions as the only problems I was having was Cruise wouldn't work and 4wd wouldn't work, and irritating dash lights, I got the sensor from my dealership for close to the online price and installed. WOW!!!! What a difference it made!!! Cleared the code, no lights, everything working properly.

Most amazing is truck doesn't 'gear hunt' excessively anymore. Totally normal downshift and my gas mileage has increased from 10-11 mpg to 14-15 mpg. I've seen others complain about their Tundra 'hunting' so this may be something you may want to look into. Truck has never driven this well..

Sorry for late response. I only login when working on Tundra.

Yes, I remember I had the stick in "N" position; however, when loosening or tightening the linkage to the neutral switch below, you will easily set to other postion. I recall I had to turn the flat protrusion to align with the black marking on the neutral switch. I then simply seat the linkage to it and tighten the nut.

I was worry about correctly setting the switch position corresponding to the stick. Thankfully, it was fine !
