How does the TRD off-road trail tuned suspension compare to the standard suspension in terms of daily on road ride quality and off-road quality? I am looking to buy a used 2021 Tundra and if it were up to me I’d choose the TRD off-road package but I’m realizing I’m at the mercy of what’s available in the used market inventory and probably not going to get everything I want. Am I making a mistake to be dead set on the TRD off-road package? Is it really that much better than standard suspension?

All shocks wear out over time, so either one you get will eventually need new shocks and you can go any direction at that point. I put the trd sport suspension (red bilstein) on my truck this year, its not that much different than the black shocks honestly. Especially in the rear, if you add the rear sway bar that negates the difference out back.

if i were shopping for a truck, i wouldnt care about the trd vs non trd. Id much more prioritize condition of the truck overall

The off road suspension is better than it gets credit for in my opinion. I just removed my TRD Fox shocks for rebuild and put my off road Bilsteins back on the truck. They had less than 3k miles on them when I took them off, so they’re for all intents and purposes new shocks.

I get that bouncy thing on seamed concrete highways a lot more with the off road shocks. Hardly noticed it with the TRD Fox. But other than that, the off road shocks are pretty comfy, nothing jarring. Probably softer than the regular black shocks.

I have a 2016 w off road package. The OR suspension is significantly better than the standard black shocks. Black shocks are mushy and wallow, really dont handle well, especially if you intend to run tires larger or heavier than stock.

However, dont let a standard suspension stop you from purchasing a good vehicle. You can swap out suspension easy enough and there are many great options at good pricing. You can get a set up better than the off road package for about a grand which would include new assembled front coilovers and rear shocks, most are 2-2.5 lift. OME, Bilstein, Eibach, and others are great for the money, certainly an upgrade over stock offerings and a great value for the cost.

For reference, I sold my off road suspension and installed eibach pro truck 2.0. adjustable 0-2.75 lift, have mine set at 2 inches lift, and I added RAS in the rear set for 1 inch lift. Also added TRD rear sway bar. Huge improvement in drivability over stock and cost was great.

Curious, how does the black standard suspension handle on light trails and obstacles? Gets the job done? I don’t plan on doing a lot of off-roading, nothing serious at least.
