Has anyone actually installed the TRD CAI? P/N PTR03-34223, The Dealer is saying this is only for 2024 Models due to an ECU reflash that must be performed during installation. Wanting to install it on my 2023 TRDPro, but also do not want to mess up my ECU....Curious if anyone has attempted install on a 2023 or 2022 model.

    Thank you,
    Chris

It’s highly unlikely that your ECU is compatible with the reflash.

if you have Carista you can check if your ecu is on this list, if it isn’t the dunno what to tell you. Mine is a 2024 model, made in late 2023, that is not compatible so I couldnt get the reflash needed

Would Toyota Parts or the dealer be able to tell for sure? I have a 2024 made in 2023 as well. Is this CAI worth it?

ok, is this CAI worth it? Probably just minimal gains in performance and efficiency I would imagine??

this requires a reflash whereas other vendors don't - got me curious as well...

ok, thank you. Might I ask where this snippit is sourced from? Does it state anywhere the labor book time for install, and finally do you see any performance enhancement figures? Apprecaite it!

My buddy is a parts manager at our local dealer. He was able to send me the install instructions from Toyota. I just looked through the instructions again and didn't see anything as far as labor time, I was quoted 3.5 hours by the dealer, about $770.00 for install. The only performance numbers I've seen are what was released from Toyota earlier this year....32 HP gained along with better throttle response, that is paired with the special TRD exhaust though, nothing for what just the CAI adds.

guaranteed that the intake tube diameter is bigger and thus, requires a flash. DTCs from intakes come from skewed air flow readings....intake air wont equal o2 sensor readings, fuel trims will be out of wack and will set DTC. That is why most intakes have same diameter intake tubes or use inserts to assist MAFs read correctly.

    perfectly explained here

Good info. I'm going to have to ask my dealer about this, I have a 7/24 build so i'd assume I should be good. I'd like to hear some feedback from someone that got them installed.

I can confirm that you need the calibration. I bought the intakes from Sparks, installed them, set off CELs, removed them, scheduled a visit to my dealership to get the calibration, paid for an hour of labor, installed the intakes in the parking lot before they calibrated (tuned) it, walked away a couple of hours later with the TRD Performance tune. I also have the Borla S-type catback. Runs so much better and you can hear the turbos and wastegates better. Paid 747 at Sparks and 231 at the dealer. I have a 2024 Platinum TRD OR. I posted these in the 3rd Gen Forum...

Hmm, now my dealerships parts page is listing this as discontinued. I've been checking it for a price drop.

    Update:
11/02/2024 - I had my local dealer recalibrate the ECU to the performance calibration based on thread #2 here (thank you). However, the dealer said that they had to remove my rear seat to recalibrate some of the back sensors. One hour of labor was $188 but I got out of there for a total of $283. I'd assume had I had the ECU recalibrated in those first 15 miles I drove before the CEL came on and parking sensor light, the dealer wouldn't have messed with the rear. Sounds ridiculous imo

In terms of performance, it is worth it to me. It is very responsive and smooth. I can certainly feel the difference, especially on the highway where I can get on it. When I say smooth, I am referring to the shifting. One huge difference between what feels like perfect shit points, is that I don't feel the transmission. Prior to installing the intake and recalibration, my truck always had a hard shift anywhere between 85mph to 105mph. The very first shift above 80mph you could feel the metal on metal shift and hear it. That was if you were getting on it like passing someone at 85mph (I live in Texas lol). Since the recal, I am not feeling any rough shifts and I got on my local tollway and opened it up a few times from 65-85mph cruising.

One thing to note about gas mileage. After I got on it on our tollway, I drove 22 miles afterwards on regular city roads with stop lights and I got 20.3 mpg. That is a first. I never ever got anything close to that before.

As far as the DTC's or CEL's that you get, at one point my left screen on the instrument cluster was flashing every couple of seconds. When I would exit, it would come back on in five seconds. Anyways, the truck went into low power mode at one point and it ran like crap. It was almost like riding the clutch as everything was louder than it wanted to go. Luckily I only had to drive a couple of miles (through a neighborhood) to get to my dealer.

Lastly, the auto stop/start kept saying 'battery charging' after the recalibration, and it never worked in the 22 miles I drove testing the mpg. Weird. If it keeps up I'll take it back to the dealer but weird coincidence. It did work before the recalibration, and after I installed the TRD Perf CAI.

Update on 11/01/2024 - Got it installed. I have a 2024 Platinum non-hybrid 4x4. After driving 15 miles the CEL and a Parking Sensor light came on. After 34 miles, about seven lights lit up so I def need the performance ECU reflash calibration since the sensor attached to the lid is obviously not set for the larger intake. Didn't have install instructions but was easy. I'd recommend installing the filter in the air box first, then securing the lid and putting the intake in. My Calibration ID is 896630CV4101. In terms of performance, after 34 miles I can say my MPG improved about 1-2 MPGs messing around on the city roads. Biggest thing is the acceleration is even more responsive than stock, it shifts very smooth and at a range that feels perfect, and the turbos were about 5x louder. Once I get the TRD Performance Exhaust or maybe a Borla, I think it is possible to see all the gains advertised. I like it.

10/28/2024: The TRD Performance intake P/N PTR03-34223 was finally shipped!

10/21/2024: I ordered the TRD Performance Intake on 9/21/24 for my June 2024 built Platinum. Toyota responded to the dealer today and says it is a port install only and not for sale anymore. The dealer I ordered from said they will fight to get this released. Said different factions of Toyota don't sometimes mesh well. I declined a refund at the moment. Not sure if it is worth the hassle and extra money for this CAI but I hope to ultimately receive it and will keep y'all posted.

Hell, I have tried to get the CAI and Toyota will not sell it, its a port option only at this point. If there are any leads on how to get it please post

I already have the TRD CAI, but was getting the truck serviced, popped into parts and asked the Parts Manager if this was a PIO or if we could still order, she called the Toyota Parts Technical, they told her and she had them on speaker, that it will not pass emissions test and they are working the problem.

    l tried looking for the parts (CAI). Local dealer called parts warehouse, and although listed in their parts book, warehouse said no part for '24 available except the filters which would fit into the OEM box. But Sparks online said they could get the part. They list it for the '24 but other Genuine Toyota parts sellers online show this part (PTR03-34223) only goes up to '23 but is the same part for all three years '22 through '24. A few months ago, the warehouse would sell you the CAI part though your dealer. Like anything else, because of emissions, nothing is legal in CA. K&N aftermarket has two kits available;

    1.
    Cold Air Intake - High-flow, Roto-mold Tube - TOYOTA TUNDRA V6-3.5L

    2.
Cold Air Intake - Dryflow, Aluminum Tube - TOYOTA TUNDRA V6-3.5L

Both of these models are the cone filters and not the TRD flat filters that were shown to me at the dealer a few months ago. Each of the flat filters are $50 each. They had both, the RED TRD boxes and the TRD Black in the order book from the warehouse. But I don't think the Black boxes would have been sold to anyone in CA with those cone filters. I believe (unless I'm wrong) the RED TRD Boxes that have the flat filters are red & black and the BLACK boxes are the cone filters. Confusing but after market filters have always been a problem to pass emissions here in CA, especially for Toyota. Moving away from this Big Brother state soon.

Have the CEL/DTC's gone away after a few more miles? Trying to order the PTR03-34223 and they are hard to find. Looks like as it has been discussed, Toyota has removed from their parts site. Looking for a delaer in SOCAL that will flash for me, my dealer said no.

They will not go away on their own without the calibration file installed (tune).

That is interesting to hear - I wonder how they would even allow a unit to go into production without it being able to pass emissions. I guess it is a good thing we don't have to do emissions for 7 years. I'll be taking mine in soon for the 1st oil change so I'll see what info I can pull from them.
