    Hello Tundra members,

I’m new to the forum, currently I own a 2016 Tundra Crewmax. I just put a down payment on a 2023 Army Green Tundra Crewmax with the TRD sport package. I like the look of the body color front surround and fender flares. I plan to mainly use the truck for driving my kids around and towing our camper. I’m wondering if I made a mistake with the TRD sport package? I love the look of this package but i hear it rides rough. I’m wonder how much rougher the ride on the TRD sport compared to the limited that I test drove? Again I love the look of this truck but I don’t want a jarring ride. I know harshness and ride feel are subjective. I’m really looking for someone who has ridden or driven both to compare the two trims.

    Thank you,
    JP

Welcome from the Great White North.

Hard to give subjective comparisons over the internet. Everyone has there own a$$ometer. If there is no TRD Sport available to test drive in advance I would make the condtion to buy it only after you test drive it. Once you plunk down the cash and sign on the dotted line, it is too late.

I’m sure it will be great. If you like the way your truck drives now then you will love the way the new one will feel. I’ve never driven a sport but it’s made for what you plan on doing with the truck. I bet it’s killer on the highway. I have a platinum and it had the plain shocks, I just upgraded to the bilstein off road shocks and the truck feels a little better but nothing outrageous. I’m sure the difference in the sport suspension isn’t drastically different. Obviously a test drive would be the way to go but I’m sure either way you’ll love the feel of the new setup

Nowadays the supply is catching up, and if you check few dealers around your area, you should be able to find many trucks available to test drive, and you shouldn't really have to wait for it... Test drive it to see how you like it

I got regular non trd shocks and ride is pretty bad in my opinion. Can feel every bump and hole in the road.

So test drive it for yourself and pay very close attention

    Welcome from NE.
I can't speak for either trim levels, you had mentioned towing a camper I would recommend getting the additional option pkg with auto level and AVS for the load & the ride quality, the tow mirrors with BSM will help to.

I have a 23 or maybe 24 sport on order. Whenever it shows up. Here on the east coast of Canada it’s still a 8-12 month wait for a tundra. I plan on ditching the stock tires on day 1, same as I did with my 2020 sport. The taller sidewall of a larger, nicer tire makes the ride better imo. I’ve never even sat in a new tundra but I’m sure it’ll be better than my 2020 which I find a little rough. My 2022 Tacoma rides smoother.

Thanks again for all of your input and comments, I appreciate your feedback. I agree I should have test drive it. When I teat drove the limited I thought that it rode pretty good for a truck, but all I have is my 2016 Tundra for comparison. With regards to towing we figured we didn’t need the ride level suspension because we have an equalize weight distribution hitch that we use when we tow our 23 foot camper. That hitch has worked perfectly in the past. Thanks again.

List of vehicles I have had extensive driving/riding with
Chevy 2500 express series passenger van - 50k miles
Chevy 1500 express extended cargo van - 50k miles
    2010 Tundra 6.5 bed - 200K
    Ford 1500 Econoline van - 50k
    2012 sequoia - 70K
    2021 tacoma - 1K
    2022 large suv 2K

The only vehicle that drove better than my TRD sport 2022 tundra was the 2022 unnamed large suv. I can't imagine someone thinking the trd sport drives rough - unless they did alot of aftermarket work.

I have identical 2022: TRD Sport premium in Army Green. I am very happy with it to include the ride. You will see some in here belittling the SR5 or trashing it to justify a higher model personal decision. It is all bunk. It is a great truck and a great value.

You ordered the TRD Sport package on what trim level? You didn’t say. Limited and above will ride a little better than an SR or SR5 due to fluid cab mounts. Most of the ride complaints here are those with the air bag suspension that is out of adjustment. (too stiff) 10 mins and a simple box end wrench solves the problem.

    Thanks again for your comments.
So the truck that’s coming in is the SR5 with the TRD sport package. I believe you need to get the TRD sport package if you want the color matched grill, and I believe this only comes on the SR5 model.
So we need a truck to pull out camper as its weight is a 5000+ lbs. Our old Tundra pulled it great with the equalizer hitch. I think the new Tundra will also tow great, but we also use the truck as a daily driver. That’s where my concerns over ride quality comes in, I heard the TRD sport package had stiff suspension and I’m just trying to understand what “stiff” is? Thanks again for your input and comments

I'm in the midst of a 3k mile road trip, and the TRD sport has been a great ride and incredibly comfortable. I can't compare it to other trims, but compared to my 2020 Tacoma, and 2008 Tundra before that, this is on a whole new level.

Only once was the ride not super smooth/comfortable, and that was on some patchwork interstate in Indiana. Besides that it's been super smooth. Decent mpg too.

Check the factory tire pressures too. Some dealers are sending them out at 45 psi which is like rock. Only needed for towing or hauling a load. Lower to 35psi and the ride will be much nicer and mpg won’t suffer. 32 is even smoother but costs 1 mpg.

Thanks. Didn’t know that but makes sense why I haven’t seen the Sport in higher trims.

Thanks again, for your input. I wish Toyota make these packages a little clearer. I do love the look of the sport package.

I wish Toyota would offer the sport premium like they do on the Tacoma and my 2020 tundra. Here in Canada if you don’t want chrome you have the sr5 sport or the trd pro ($86k+)

They do. I have one on order and being built this week. But I am in the US. Maybe not in Canada.

Interesting question .. I own a 2023 SR5 TRD double cab, test drove a SR5 standard trim crew cab and while my truck was in for service drove a 2023 SR5 TRD Sport. Without question the Sport had the smoothest ride, first 100 miles my wife commended on the great ride. I can use a floor roller to slide under my TRD, however with the lowered suspension I couldn't get under the Sport, so noticeably lower truck.

Thanks for the comments still waiting for mine to come in. We need the crew max with our kids. I appreciate the comment on the smooth ride. I dont mind a rough ride, but when i put the payment down on the truck I assumed the ride differences between the trd sport and trd off road and sr5 standard were all similar.
