    Hey all,

Wondering if anyone here has had any luck yet with a truck bed rack system fitting their 22' Tundra? Have a Crewmax with the 5.5 bed and am looking to use it for a canoe up top so I can keep the bed free for 2 kayaks.

Have emails out to Yakima and Thule as their websites say their systems won't fit.

1st pick up truck owner here so not sure if the 21 and earlier Tundra's had a different system?

Can see obviously that I'd have to utilize the track system. Did prior models have the same track and/or system?

Also have the tri-fold hard tonneau cover from Toyota that I'm assuming id have to remove as to spread the towers as far apart as possible if that makes sense?

    Thanks,
    David

KB Voodoo is assembling sets right now for their new PRO-MAX rack system that is 58” long and comes in different heights. I loved my KB Alumax that I had for my Tacoma. They work mounted straight onto the truck or with tonneau covers. Once I get my PRO-MAX I’m going to do an install thread with my Diamondback cover. I am the west coast rep for them so let me know if you have any questions and I’ve got a discount code as well.

This was my Tacoma build, KB Voodoo is unique because you can add a cargo tray under the rack on the taller versions. That tray extends out on sliders so you can access the whole tray. I loved it. My build for my Tundra will be similar. 9FDAE021-4F27-4A50-B0F4-3288740BB722.jpg

Thanks hivetyrant and PapaDave418. Checked out the KB Voodoo racks that you both sent and they look real nice. Sent them an email just now to check if they are compatible but I'm thinking they are. See you can order a test bracket from them which I may do tonight.

Can't thank you both enough, appreciate it!

I saw your email with pics of the cover. A test bracket is definitely a good idea for you.

The rack will fit, but I want you to make sure you LIKE how it fits before ordering the rack.

Would love to hear how a test bracket goes. I've got the OEM Tri-fold cover and I would love to find a rack system that works with the cover. I know a lot of racks work with various tonneau covers, but it seems the OEM cover usually requires a fair amount of cutting/modification to make it work with racks.

Love your rack design. If I can make the rack work with minimal modification to the OEM cover...I'll hand over my CC right now. haha

Thanks KB Voodoo. Appreciate the help and will order the test bracket today. Nice to know it’ll fit. Guess Its all about deciding whether to leave the bracket in place and having a small gap of some type or removing the tonneau whenever I wanted to utilize the rack system, if I understand it correctly…

    Thanks again,
    David

I’ve been accused of “over doing” things, but I personally don’t go off roading everyday and need my rack on all the time so my roof top tent and rack I kept as one unit and built a hoist to remove/install it like a backpack for when I needed it. With the tonneau brackets it’s 4 bolts and I can take it on and off in 5 minutes without breaking a sweat.

The thickness of the tonneau brackets will make the cover "tighter" to close. The brackets will also create small gaps under between the cover and the truck.

For some people these aren't issues, they're just happy to have a rack that works with their cover.

    For others, it's an issue.

You could always get a Retrax cover and either a Yakima Overhaul HD rack or one of the knockoff racks on Amazon. Retrax says that they're available for the '22 Tundras now.

Definitely not inexpensive, but I love the RetraxPro XR bed cover and Yakima Overhaul HD rack on my XD.

I used extruded aluminum to fabricate an intermediate level rack for our solar suitcase.

I'm looking to go with this, but the Yakima Overhaul foot fit kit for the Retrax cover is being redesigned and isn't for sale right now. The T-nuts were seemingly undersized, lots of complaints online for the current version. I called Yakima and was told it'd be a while and there was no ETA for shipping the revised version.

    This specifically:

If you go this route, just make sure they send you SS hardware or you get this going on and have to pull the thing apart.

Yeah the problem is T nuts for the extrusions come in black oxide so they are stronger than stainless steel but can rust over time. My company deals with aluminum, stainless, and black oxide all day. We got away from black oxide screws but still have to use the T nuts

That was early 2020, they've since been redesigned. The only issue now is that Yakima is having supply chain issues and everything is pretty much backordered.

I bought my kit 11/21 from eTrailer and it's the redesigned T-bolts per Yakima.

Either way, that was a seemingly informed rep's take on it. Not sure if another redesign happened as there still seems to be a lot of really pissed off people in reviews online.

... At their reco, I did purchase the kit from eTrailer to help 'push for them to be made and shipped'. The latest from them, is June ETA.

"Thank you for your order with etrailer.com, we appreciate your business.

Our shipment of the ladder racks parts (Y01155) have not yet arrived from the manufacturer. I checked with them for an update and expect to receive your parts the week of June 20. I will personally keep you updated and email tracking information as soon as it is available."

I got the rack and rail mounting kit right before they started backordering everything.

Had the side rails on order through eTrailer with a 2 week delivery time, then on the day they were supposed to arrive delivery jumped 6 months out. I called Yakima and they said they can't get any materials to build their stuff. I looked at every website for 2 weeks straight and nothing in stock. I finally discovered that Ford sold them as a factory option and started looking around, ended up finding the side rails at an online Ford parts retailer for the same price as eTrailer and had them delivered in four days. Apparently Ford has more buying power than a lot of other companies and has Yakima stuff stocked in warehouses.

I got the Rhino XRS Cross Bars. I am still building out the accessories. I went with the short bars so that I can use the rear camera.

KB Voodoo Pro X crossbars with their 3 inch tent risers. Sits below the roof rack which I needed so I can fit kayaks up there!! Plenty of space to add accessories onto and around the crossbars.

My good friend has his CBI rack break apart, honestly I was surprised as I like CBI. He went with KB Voodoo’s Alumax rack.

I just mounted up the new KB Voodoo ProMax rack and it’s awesome. Modular, stout, and worked great running up to the mountains this weekend. I’m still waiting on the optional gear lockers that are placed on the sides and my Rotopax. I also have the optional cargo tray which is a game changer. I still need to add my rack lights and chase bar, but this is the build so far. Btw it goes in and off my Diamondback cover with a hoist, makes it kinda like a back pack. I put it on as a whole unit (rack/tent/cargo tray) when I go off roading and take it off when I get home.
