2014 Tundra, TRD Pro, Limited owner here. Yesterday, I got home and had to rush in for a phone call and forgot to apply my parking brake (which I usually always do!). A few hours later i noticed my truck had creeped down the driveway a considerable amount - about 5 or 6 feet from where it was originally parked. I attributed it to snow melting under the rear tires and the car creeping with it and called it a day but then it happened again today. I tested it without the parking brake and lo and behold - 4 hrs later the freaking truck was 5 feet down the driveway again! I obviously wont be parking without the e-brake from now on (pretty much like i always do) but surely this amount of creeping is not normal? Video is below and any help/advice is appreciated, I'm scratching my head on this one especially with how SLOW it moves but will get it in to get looked at it too ASAP.

Sir, you may have transmission park issue. It should not roll that much once in "P" = park.

    Too many, but not enough....
I have this issue with my parking brake too, it will move a few inches every time then stop, when it stops is when i put it in park from neutral. I really need to adjust the parking brake cable one of these days. Its a common issue i hear on these trucks.

I’m having deja vu - last time it was concluded it was melting ice under the tires causing it to slide. I don’t think it’s a coincidence the truck is parked on a pile of ice. I doubt the wheels rotated as it slid. Gravity and lack of friction doing its thing.

Well, that ain’t right lol. I see in the video the front and rear wheels are indeed spinning as it rolls down the driveway.

This is the original video when it was parked on ice, not the second time when it wasn't parked on ice.

This is insane! I've had this happen before with vehicles, but it has always been due to ice. Never in park on dry ground.

WTH? I mean is the parking pawl just not engaged at all? or just slightly? if that's even possible?

I would definitely show that video to Toyota and have it looked at. I'll be keeping an eye on mine now, that's for sure.

Please follow up if you find the culprit.

Perhaps the grinding noise was incomplete disengagement of the parking pawl. Now it’s worn and won’t hold the truck.

Wouldn’t be able to get the key out if it was left in gear - never would have held in N.

This is a really good idea! I'll try that tomorrow morning when I get back. Here's the craziest part - it's almost like when the sun warms the truck up it causes it to creep... scared that it is the transmission now though....ugh

I have the same year truck as you, my drive way is on a cul-de-sac but my driveway appears steeper. I have only ever used the parking brake when I park on the incline with the boat (3700 lbs) of the enclosed trailer.

Have never had it move, snow/ice/concrete...never moved.

When I do use the parking break I put the the truck in neutral with the brake applied, keep the brake applied and set the parking brake. Let go of the regular brake to make sure the enough parking brake is applied and the truck doesn't creep backwards, and then put the truck in park.

Custom bug spat pattern hood, grill & bumper. Dead Live Oak leaf collection under hood, cowl and lower fenders. Beach sand custom floor covering.
I couldn't see it it the video but if both the rear wheels are in fact turning in the direction it's rolling there is an real problem. Seems more likely one is turning backwards on ice or snow.

Ford had a recall in 2020 for some trucks. The shift cable was not installed correctly which allowed the key to be removed without the vehicle being in park, despite the gear select showing to be in park… allowing it to roll.

Maybe your transmission cable needs some maintenance.

If your truck was a Ford f150… be glad it’s not because the forum there does not seem to be so cooperative in solving problems (judging from one really long post about a 150 rolling when supposedly in park).

I'm pretty sure I saw these threads yesterday as I was googling....seemed eerily similar

Toyota service said they'd call me back but I assume that won't be until tomorrow.

Damaged parking pawl is one possibility. Other is you have one wheel on ice and non-LSD which can roll if one wheel slips.

With an open diff in the rear axle, it only takes one rear wheel to slip for the truck to slide backwards. The other wheel will roll.

Is your Tundra 4wd? Park it in 4hi, and see if it stays put.
