    Hey everyone!

has anybody mounted the TSS sensor behind a custom metal grill?

For example a T-Rex metal grill in particular.

I want to put a metal grill on the front of my 2021 Tundra then put a logo on it.

Oh yes I see it. Cool, didn’t know that option.

The sensor is behind that aluminum plate…

    Ok good info!

I definitely want to find out if people have used a sensor behind a regular grill and not through the plastic insert or mounting frame similar to what’s used in the TRD grill

The sensor will not function if it’s mounted behind anything. No mesh or anything. The radar must have a 100% clear line of sight or it will trigger a malfunction.

From what I have seen that is not true. Sensor works behind plastic. Right? Original mounting location is behind plastic.

So can is work behind mesh or in between mesh?

@2020Platinum has a sensor relocation video. I wouldn't put the sensor behind a metal grill. These trucks are sensitive when it comes to electronics and sensors.

Thanks! Yes that dude is pretty cool and helpful. That’s what I’m wondering about the sensitivity really. I’m trying to not buy the grill and everything couple times. I can try below on the surround but that area might be blocked for me.

The plastic the sensors are behind are nothing more than a clear protective lens. That provides an unobstructed view. The sensors use a radar that detects anything that is a solid object in front of it. A clear lens allows the radar to pass through. Anything solid will bounce the wave back and that’s how the pre collision works. It “sees” objects in front of the vehicle and applies the brakes to prevent collision. So anything that is solid, as in a mesh grill, will cause feedback to the radar and due to the “noise” it will cause the sensor to malfunction.

Awesome! Thanks! So I didn’t quite understand the plastic piece was clear and makes perfect sense why/how sensor works.

Guess that is why the bottom surround works in dudes video too. Clear plastic.

    @Tundra234

I have other pics and have mounted grill on everything.

I am just waiting to paint the hood bulge and grill surround.

I already mounted the TSS sensor on the bottom of the grill surround.

Nice. Mine is a 2020 so I wanted to keep the sensor on the grill. I will be putting my 4 Rigid pods behind it like I did on my 2013.
