I own a 2022 Tundra and have been notified that my truck will need to have the engine replaced. While trying to wrap my head around what this entire process will look like and how long it may take, a couple questions come to mind that, if answered, might allow putting things in a little better perspective. 1) Of the apprx. 100,000 Tundras that are affected, how many or what percentage of them have actually had problems? and 2) What are the chances of problems developing after 25-30,000 miles, if it has exhibited none of the problems before? I take long, cross country fishing trips and I'm wondering about the likelihood of getting far away from home and having a major problem. Thanks in advance for any insight you might shed.

I can’t answer the first question but it would have to be high enough that they’re replacing 100,000 engines .
The second question , there was at least 1 documented engine that blew at 62,000 miles .

Here's a sampling that previous forum member maintains. Keep in mind it's not a full all encompassing list but should give an idea.

My three cents... drive it like it's gonna keep running forever. If it self-destructs, both you and Toyota are apprised of the issue so you won't need to worry about what happened or if Toyota will cover you. I've seen a few guys post about blow motors in the last few weeks since the recall was announced; Toyota put them in a rental until the engine gets fixed.

I haven't read the fine print on the notice that was delivered to owners, but I haven't seen a "Park your vehicle and DO NOT DRIVE IT" notice as has been issued by other MFG's for other recalls. If that's the case, drive it and let Toyota take care of you if it breaks.

I do understand the apprehension, though, and am not trying to downplay that nagging in the back of the minds of 3rd gen owners. It's a crummy situation, but like I said, it's a known possibility on Toyota's end, so there shouldn't be the apprehension of 'what happened? How deep do I need to dig in to my wallet to get out of this jam?'

Your truck is 2 years old, you are getting a new engine under warranty .....like a lotto win.

Some dealership service departments can barely handle an oil change without screwing something up…..

Exactly my concern. The dealership also has zero interest in helping, as it's Toyota NA's problem, not theirs. The dealership where I live has been absolute garbage in trying to work with on any issue, much less a full replacement of my engine.

I have a 24 hybrid, no recall on that.....yet. However, I will keep driving, buy a big extended warranty when it's time, and not worry about it. My squealing brakes were highly annoying, got them replaced for free by Toyota covered by the TSB. I took it as a win since I now have new front brake pads and rotors after I used the other ones for 11k miles. I would've waiting even longer if the noise wasn't so loud that I feared waking the neighbors backing out of my driveway early in the morning. If my engine blows up, I'll get a new one for free and take it as another win. Hell, let me go 100k before she blows, absolute win at that point.

You’re either living today in the present or living in a future which you can't control. (Up to a point) Go fishing today, and drive the truck you have at the moment. None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow.

    DennyG,

My 2 cents, I too had concerns but mine was for the turbo issues in the beginning and I purchased an extended warranty from a Toyota dealer that’s been posted on this site.
Now the recall on the engine is yet another reason to buy the Toyota extended warranty. If that’s not enough I also had concerns like you for traveling out of state. I contacted Toyota from the recall notice and they offered to reach out to my local Toyota dealer’s Service Manager to give a pre-approval for a rental vehicle for up to $60.00 a day for my out of state trip. In addition if I still didn’t feel safe driving my truck they would cover the rental vehicle until my engine was replaced.

Bottom line, Toyota will make it right.

This is why I buy Toyota. I’ve owned every generation Tundra since 1999 when I ordered the first Tundra.

I thought this problem was fixed, and was due to lack of cleaning the engine internals when new(?). I bought a '24 Tundra Limited Hybrid, and there is another '24 Hybrid on the list above. How do I find the actual build day? Mine says order date 12/23, build month and year 02/24. I changed the oil at 4,000 miles, but it looks like it's not just e.g. shavings in a new engine since avg miles at failure (according to above) is around 31k miles. What is the actual cause?

I really appreciate all the responses and all the pertinent suggestions regarding just going ahead and using my truck. I guess that's the only logical way to approach things since I do have to use this vehicle and Toyota has never refused to be reasonable on any of my past vehicle problems. I have driven Toyota trucks for the past 32 years and have no complaints about the way Toyota has handled things. Thanks again for all your comments and help.

People get angry about what may happen to something they don't even own.
I've got a 2023. Part of me wouldn't mind getting a new engine for the helluvit. The other part likes that my truck is dialed in and runs perfect. I win either way.

Update on my dealership in Santa Barbara, California. I was advised a few days ago that they don't have a fix yet and no ETA, either. It's been 1.5 months without my vehicle.

So I went into the dealership today armed with the NHTSB information on the total number of trucks that have failed, including mine (it's less than 1% of the 102k), the cost to Toyota of having to keep me in a rental, the cost to my business, my losses of upgrades, the fact that I had just purchased extended Toyota Care at 25k miles (it failed just 2k miles later at 27k), etc, etc, etc.

Eventually the manager says, "We aren't going to do that. If we buy back your vehicle, we'll be the last ones to get a fix. We'll have to just absorb a worthless vehicle waiting for it to be repaired one day."

While probably true, I was amazed. "A worthless vehicle" and putting the customer last. Wow.

I called Toyota NA directly today. A case number has been given to me now.

Toyota of Santa Barbara is officially on my shit list. I had bought two Tacos there, a Sequoia, and this Tundra in Feb. of 2024. No more.

First time? Dealers care about you even less than Toyota does. Until Toyota and their dealers get out of the “we’re Toyota, we’re better” mindset, this is how it’s going be for most folks.

Hell, there’s a big dealer here in the Phx area that isn’t giving much for discounts and I’m watching their Tundra and Tacoma inventory skyrocket. Good. Lose money you thieving aholes. No pity for people that have been ripping off the public for years.

That said, sorry to hear about your issues. Have you engaged Toyota about a buyback?

Yep - as per the above, I did. Have a case number and asking/requesting a buy back. Finally, hopefully, moving forward. Even if it's just an inch, that's an inch more than the last month and a half.
